5.0 out of 5 stars A little bit of happiness 9 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
I bought the CD for a friend's daughter at Christmas as she is familiar with Ketelbey from her music studies at university.

We listened to it over dinner and found our feet tapping as we hummed through our meal and enjoyed every minute of the CD. Having bought NAXOS recordings before, and always been pleased with the quality, this one lived up to its reputation.

If you fancy some easy listening background music that feels familiar, stirs the imagination and memories of a very happy past, or conjures up pleasant images of foreign lands, you could do a lot worse than listen to this collection of Ketelbey's.

I'm definitely going to buy a copy for myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars UNUSUAL BUT BEAUTIFUL MUSIC 24 May 2014

Music from another time and place, but it's beautiful and nostalgic. I feel this music should be heard more often.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected - but fine stuff! 23 April 2014

This is really the kind of music that sounds at its best on a Gramophone Machine if you have one - and the original 78 records. I really only purchased this CD for two tracks; for Ketelbey's wonderful `Bells Across The Meadows' which I've had for years on a 78 performed by the fabulous Gatty Sellars. Unfortunately for me, this CD does not contain that particular version, and having heard that one before any other (and I have several versions on 78) it cannot be surpassed in my opinion, and so one is `spoilt' and so cannot really appreciate this version as much as one might - still a good one though nonetheless. The second is `The Sacred Hour' (again; not the version included here) which I also have on a 78 performed as music with choir. The version here is beautifully sang I might add by the great Peter Dawson.

This CD collection was not quite what I had expected from Ketelbey; there's one or two tracks I'm little interested in, but it's worth having believe me for three of the most beautiful tracks which are; `In The Mystic Land Of Egypt' featuring superb singing from Dennis Noble; `Sanctuary Of The Heart' performed spectacularly with the vocals of Nellie Walker, and finally `In A `Monastery Garden' with the deep rich Bass of Oscar Natzke.

Highlights are tracks 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12.

A nice collection - but the transfers are not brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars PURE NOSTALGA 26 Jun 2009
By Pinkbus
Format:Audio CD
This is a record for people of a certain age to listen to, just drift away and remember what England used to be like, when you could leave your door unlocked, buy broken biscuits, and sugar was bought from the grocers in a blue cone shaped paper wrapper, made by the shopkeeper from a square of paper.
When there were rag and bone men, yes, they did buy rags and old metal from their horse and cart........... days gone forever.
