This is really the kind of music that sounds at its best on a Gramophone Machine if you have one - and the original 78 records. I really only purchased this CD for two tracks; for Ketelbey's wonderful `Bells Across The Meadows' which I've had for years on a 78 performed by the fabulous Gatty Sellars. Unfortunately for me, this CD does not contain that particular version, and having heard that one before any other (and I have several versions on 78) it cannot be surpassed in my opinion, and so one is `spoilt' and so cannot really appreciate this version as much as one might - still a good one though nonetheless. The second is `The Sacred Hour' (again; not the version included here) which I also have on a 78 performed as music with choir. The version here is beautifully sang I might add by the great Peter Dawson.
This CD collection was not quite what I had expected from Ketelbey; there's one or two tracks I'm little interested in, but it's worth having believe me for three of the most beautiful tracks which are; `In The Mystic Land Of Egypt' featuring superb singing from Dennis Noble; `Sanctuary Of The Heart' performed spectacularly with the vocals of Nellie Walker, and finally `In A `Monastery Garden' with the deep rich Bass of Oscar Natzke.
Highlights are tracks 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12.
A nice collection - but the transfers are not brilliant.
