Ordnance Survey Ireland, like its British counterpart, provides highly useful mapping products for the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Its Discovery Series corresponds to the British Landranger Series, featuring a 1:50,000 scale and multicolored presentation that provide a wealth of detail for planning and navigating on a trip around Ireland.
Discovery Series Map #71 is one of several that cover County Kerry in the West of Ireland. At the center of the sheet is the town of Tralee, home to the annual "Rose of Tralee International Festival" and to the year-round Kerry County Museum. The Kerry County Museum has a number of historical and archeological displays, but its main attraction may be the "Kerry The Kingdom" ride through a recreated medieval town. West of Tralee is Bana Strand, a long beach which runs for about seven miles along the Atlantic Ocean. Also near Tralee are the ruins of Ardfert Cathedral, a monastic complex once linked to the locally famous St. Brendan the Navigator.
Also on this map sheet are Stack's Mountains, east of Tralee, and the Slieve Mish Mountains at the base of the Dingle Peninsula, both of which offer some opportunities for walks. The area in general offers an established network of good(if narrow) roads that permit enjoyable automobile touring through scenic country along the Atlantic Ocean and a less developed portion of Ireland.
Discovery Series Map #71 is highly recommended as one of several mapsheets that will be useful to the traveler planning a visit to County Kerry.
