Yanka Rupkina is Bulgaria's most famous folk singer, and in particular the form known as Keranka which is special to her native region by the Strandja mountains. It is said that without Yanka's renowned career performing this music the story of Keranka would now be simply an historical footnote in a learned book about the history of music. After years of performing and recording behind the Iron Curtain with the Bulgarian National Radio Music Ensemble, in 1994 - five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall - she embarked on a solo career while also performing with the Bulgarka Vocal Trio, with whom she travelled the world. This enabled her to expand her repertoire into opera and western popular music. She has recorded with Kate Bush and Chris de Burgh, and on this album - recorded in Bulgaria, Holland, Arizona and Mexico studios with live tracks from London and Amsterdam - she is joined on one track by Linda Ronstadt and on another by the Senegalese duo Positive Black Soul. In the album there are three Keranka's. Keranka A was composed in Amsterdam, Keranka B was composed in Bulgaria and finally Keranka C was performed at the famous Carré Theatre in Holland.
