I have had more expensive kettles with lids that pop up using a lever and the lid kept breaking; I didn't need or want pretty lights to tell me when it was boiling - basically I wanted a straightforward, robust design with a pull off lid that would just boil water! This does the job and is sturdy and pleasant looking, and at a good price. I've since bought one for the office, and my colleague has ordered one after using the office one. I wouldn't say it was that noisy, the capacity is generous and it's quick to boil. Highly recommended.

A lovely Kettle in every way. Nice looking and easy to use. The water measure is in a prominent position unlike other kettles we have owned. Not too noisy when switched on. Fast boiling.

Good points: looks nice, hidden elements, good price, seems robust and boils quickly

Bad points: I find the lid a bit tricky to get off - there is not enough room to put your your fingers under the handle. Also this means burnt fingers if the kettle has recently boiled. Also I do miss a light or some kind of indicator to tell me the kettle has been switched on.

Very quick to boil and it pours well. For the relatively cheap price it's a very good kettle.

The Kenwood SMJ270 Kettle is sleek and stylish. I followed the manufacturers instructions and ensure that I do not fill the kettle to capacity each time I use it and now put in enough water to make enough cups of tea to suit my requirements. The kettle is efficient and boils very quickly.

We purchased this kettle to replace our lately defunct Krupps Fastboil kettle (which has suprisingly bad reviews I notice!). Anyway, given the disparity between the reviews of both kettles I presumed this was going to work very well indeed. Not so!
Yes, it is pretty, but there are alot of drawbacks which have annoyed me (and continue to annoy me despite having used it for over 3 months now) and I will be going back to the Krups model when this decides to bow out.

The balance of this is poor and more varaiable then it should be depending on how full it is: thus if you usually use a little water at a time and then fill the kettle a little more, the pouring action is so different that you end up sploshing hot water over the work surface as you miss the cup. It also gets very hot on the outside - not good for small children and the lid gets very hot also so if you want to re-use immediately you need to use a cloth to protect your hands when opening the lid. The lid is quite stiff and requires two hands to open it and sometimes doesn't click back in place - so if others have filled the kettle before you and it has been pushed home incorrectly you can (and I have - though I'm more careful about this now) end up pouring the kettle to find the lid falling off and the the hot water pouring all over the place.
Of the lesser but also annoying traits : yes it is very noisy - you can't hear the telephone ring above it for instance & it is difficult to see how much you need to use as a one cup ammount (I see other reviewers think it's quite simple to work this out, but actually you do have to take the lid right off to look down into it to be sure you are covering the base and that's frankly a pain (!
