I bought one to replace a Tefal unit where the thermostat had ceased to allow high temperature frying (190 deg C) The Kenwood has metal internal bowl to hold the fat, that is deep enough for safe operation. The wirebasket for frying has two positions, you need to raise the lid to switch from raised to lowered. The lid is can be lifted out of the main container to aid cleaning when the oil has cooled. Icons for food types can be found on the lid with the appropriate frying times and temperatures for easy reference. On the example I bought the lid latch did not engage consistently, which is safety hazard and for that reason it will be returned, but I am quite prepared to assume this was a one off and see if the replacement works better as it did turn out an excellent test batch of chips.
Addendum- replacement performs faultlessly.
