I was a little surprised when this blender arrived, that it had a note inside it saying that it could not be used for hot soup: everything blended must be at room temperature (how this works with the ice crushing feature I don't know!).
Although this item is widely advertised on the internet as dishwasher safe, the actual instructions that came with it recommended hand washing and also said that the blade unit (ie, the plastic bit on the bottom that unclips from the motor) must not be immersed in water.
I am prepared to live dangerously (and I bought it to replace a cheap non-dishwasher-safe plastic one that none the less survived many years of dishwashering until I accidentally forgot to put the rubber seal back on the base and flooded the motor with onion soup) so I fully intend to use this for warm soup, shove it in the dishwasher and generally ignore the instructions.
However, if you are a lawabiding type, you might be bothered by this, and no doubt for a few months until I forget, I shall be watching it cautiously to see if it explodes or something when I wash it or put soup in. So, three stars only, because the description here doesn't properly reflect the product, which is always a bit of a disappointment.
However, it does seem robust and well put together, so far as I can tell so far, only having used it a couple of times.
Update June 2011 - OK, well using it for hot soup and dishwashing it has not killed it yet. However, you do have to be really careful if you do try to liquidise hot soup in it - because there is no vent, the lid can come off if you try to liquidise something hot and the pressure changes. I wish I'd bought a cheap plastic one, frankly.
