I'm a bit of a hardened trackball fan.

When I read about the future release of this trackball in computer magazine a few years back I resolved to buy it. It has been a number of years since me reading the first review and Kensington actually getting around to releasing a model for the European market (there are several models of this trackball for different markets as each has to pass different health and safety regulations), and in that time I've read so many American reviews as to why the drivers and software available for it doesn't quite live up to the Kensington Expert Trackball.

The general consensus of opinion (and I would have to agree) is that the SlimBlade is the better hardware, but the best software support is for the Expert Trackball. The reason people don't like the software available for it is that it isn't very customizable, all that happens is when you hit either of the upper two mouse buttons, a large icon is displayed on your screen (right in the middle - could be quite annoying), and if you're in one of the applications the software is programmed for (such as iTunes, etc) then you'll be able to adjust the volume of the music, or change track, (or do something else - in my opinion equally pointless) by rotating the ball. Unlike the

I have tried out many trackball devices recently and they all seem to be flawed in some way - either they force your hand into a particular position (which often is uncomfortable for my large hands) or they don't include features that I've come to rely on (e.g. the scroll wheel or a middle button).

With the Kensington the two buttons are further 'forward' than other devices such as the marble mouse and I find this more comfortable. Also because the device is symmetrical there's no issue with using it either right or left handed. There's no middle button but once you've installed the Kensington software you can set it up so that both buttons clicked together simulate a middle click which works well for me and is useful in Windows 7.

The scroll ring doesn't have any resistance so I had to play with the scroll speed settings until I found a speed I was comfortable with. However it does mean that with a little practice you can 'flick' it to scroll a larger distance which can be handy sometimes.

Some people say the supplied wrist rest doesn't fit very well but it seems secure enough to me as long as you attach it in the correct manor, plus as you're not moving it around on the desk it seems to stay in place ok. However, although it IS made of a rubber like material, it is quite hard and doesn't really offer much in the way of comfort. Some softer gel based material would be much better I think.

The trackball itself is exactly the same size as the one in the Logitech marble mouse, and trying them side by side there's not much difference in the action of the mechanism. The Kensington feels almost as smooth as the Logitech, but the marble mouse feels a little more 'weighty'. It's really very subjective and the difference is tiny.

Recently I have changed from a mouse to a trackball to relieve RSI. This is the beast I chose. It does look a bit of a beast, but it is so comfortable to use, and the wrist support included is a real innovation compared to others.

I used to use a thumbwheel a few years ago but I find the "Expert" far more comfortable.

It is comfortable to use, and allows great pointer control and options.

Features and flexibility are great also. Scroll ring is great idea, but I agree (with a previous reviewer) a little cheap and tacky in feel - but what the hell - it works fine!

Areas I would suggest could be improved?

- make it wireless

(there used to be a wireless version I think, but discontinued).

I have one of these at work and was carrying to and from home to use in evenings - I am now buying a second one to keep at home.

After 2 weeks I already feel a difference in my RSI - almost gone!!

Even if you do not have RSI, this is a great alternative to a mouse.

I've never used a track ball before and was a little weary about buying this at first but am now so glad i did. Take a little getting used to at first but after a week you'll wounder how you managed without. General computer use is great as your not sawing you arm up and down the desk and the scroll ring is top notch. This really comes into play when using photoshop where you can use it to zoom in and out and scroll left right, up down with ease. Really can't say enough about this product. Best money ever spent!
