Losing your laptop is unthinkable Protect your computer with incomparable security, the disc lock The most advanced disc locking technology is featured with high-carbon steel cables, external braided steel sheath, and patented T-bar locking mechanism that attaches to the standard Kensington security slot found in 99% of laptop and computer devices From Kensington, the world leader in laptop security
Own two of these - one for my Samsung HDTV and one for my laptop and have had them for about 3-4 months now.
This particular lock is Kensington's (currently) most secure and advanced lock and on that information I chose to purchase this lock above all the others.
Yes, they are a bit more costly than the other one's you can buy but the main difference between this one and the cheaper locks is the lock mechanism and the keys - they aren't the 'circular'/'locker' keys that most of the other keys have but suposedly unpickable locks. The keys on this model are actually very unusual - they have 4 sides! However, scouring the internet before purchase, the lock on this is meant to be much better then the other kinds.
On that information alone using this lock actually makes you feel like you can leave your laptop somewhere if you need to without the worry of it getting stolen.
This lock might be more expensive than others but I would highly recommend it. It feels secure on both my TV and laptop and gives me such peace of mind (I actually use mine at university). Just loop it around a solid object and back through itself and then lock it up. Easy to lock, easy to remove (with the key obviously).
This is obviously only designed as a first point of defence against thieves - a determined thief could probably force the lock off but he would most definately have destroyed half of the laptop's case too. A good deterant then? then again, what thief wants half a laptop...
If you are worried about leaving your laptop on your desk at work, home or university buy this for peace of mind and trust me you will never be worried again.
There are some users who have complained about kensington lock actually damaged their laptop's exterior due to the extreme force of the locking mechanism. It really depends on the particular laptop you are using. Most laptops do not have such problem. My laptop, which is ASUS F3Jc, works perfectly with "MicroSaver DS".
(1) This "MicroSaver DS" is a solid build from head to toe. Expensive, yet a good buy still. (2) "MicroSaver DS" is a much better version than "MicroSaver". The major improvement is the lock. The card trick is not going to work on DS. (3) The key is symmetric. It is simply brilliant. (4) It comes with a big solid plastic clamp to hold the rest of the cable when you only need a short length. Excellent design.
Important note: the Kensington lock only prevents your laptop from being removed physically. You still need other measures to protect your data. It is never a good idea to leave your laptop unattended in an open space for a long period, say more than 30 minutes.
Works well and is very robust. No problems. They key was a little stiff to turn with my Samsung NC10 Netbook. Turning the key pushes the rubber seal tightly against the computer case and this requires a little force. (In fact, I initially thought that the key would not turn). However, I imagine this tight seal to the computer case is actually a very good thing in terms of security.
