Can only echo the other review. I would also recommend. I picked it up in a charity shop as I recall and have read it several times now. It's the story of an unlikely friendship between a young homeless girl and an older man who has been discharged from the army and subsequent psychiatric care, interwoven with the loneliness anyone can feel in London. It would be all too easy for it to have become a story of a sexual relationship or something more superficial, but it doesn't. The author has a real talent for writing about personalities and especially the way a young teenagers mind works. Fascinating!

Leslie Thomas tackles the difficult subject of post traumatic stress disorder, loneliness and choas in modern London. His pathos and humour make the book a joy to read. A book all members of the "caring professions" should read, and one that I am never ashamed to recommend.
