From Amazon.co.uk

It’s been a while since the dependable Australian movie industry served up another of the quirky, enjoyable comedies it became famed for in the 1990s. But Kenny proves that there’s no shortage of talent down under, with a well put together marriage of comedy and drama that pays off handsomely.

The film is a spoof documentary surrounding plumber Kenny Smyth, played by Shane Jacobson. Building its character up carefully and diligently, Kenny then takes us through the lows (unpleasant father, equally unpleasant ex-wife, not altogether pleasant job), and then better days. These come when Kenny heads off to the International Pumper & Cleaner Expo in America, and while we won’t spoil what happens here, it’s a well-told, rounded story that emerges.

There are plenty of reasons to like Kenny, and its lead actor is one of the main ones. Shane Jacobson’s performance is strong and engaging, capturing the optimistic outlook of the central character very well. The film is then directed by Shane’s brother, Clayton, and his work too is full of promise. Mock documentaries haven’t been scarce in recent times, yet the two Jacobsons nonetheless carve out a warm and engaging story within the confines of the genre.

Kenny isn’t a film without a couple of problems, and there are a couple of lulls that come with the journey. But it’s a film with a rounded central character who you’ll laugh at, care about, and ultimately, enjoy spending time with. An easy recommendation. --Jon Foster

5.0 out of 5 stars Kenny 5 Dec 2008
I'm not a regular cinema goer and generally dislike profanities but this was the funniest film I've seen for many a year. I was not influenced by the fact that it's an Australian movie and I'm an Australian resident because it was so true. I was convinced that Kenny was the real 'dunny man'. Quite frankly - hilarious!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious! 20 Oct 2008
This film had me laughing from start to finish. The acting is so good I wasn't sure at times if it was real life or not. In my opinion, anyone who can't see the funny side to this film needs to take a chill pill. Will definately watch again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly funny 10 Dec 2008
Format:DVD|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a really great film!

I was expecting a very poor comendy loaded with poor toilet humour(parden the pun) what I got was well thought out jokes that seemed perfectly natural coming from the character.

The character of kenny is really well acted and scripted. The comments and actions make him a really likable character that happily goes about a less than desirable job taking pride in his work despite the disproval of his father and brother.

I am not usually a big fan of the mockumentary style of film but this works very very well in this film. You can almost beleive that you are following round a real person.

I recommend this to everyone who wants a laid back comedy that is easy to watch and very funny.

"It takes a certain kind of person to do what I do. No-one's ever impressed; no-one's ever fascinated. If you're a fireman, all the kids will want to jump on the back of the truck and follow you to a fire. There's going to be no kids willing to do that with me. So, I don't do it to impress people - it's a job, it's my trade, and I actually think I'm pretty good at it."

Kenny is a plumber for a company that specializes in Corporate Bathroom Rentals - "At the end of the day it's just a fancy way a having somewhere to ***t. Having a nice place to pooh." Sometimes that involves calculating the **ss-to-***t ratio at a rock concert (whether they're serving curry or not is a crucial factor), sometimes it means crawling in a septic tank with a smell that's going to outlast religion and sometime it means rolling up his sleeves to retrieve a lost wedding ring before it gets a chance to `settle,' but that's not as bad as it sounds. After all, it's 80% water and the chemicals take care of the other 20%. But he doesn't think he has anything to apologize for - after all, it's not all pain and anger and he never has to worry about his business drying up overnight. It has his drawbacks: it led to his bitter divorce, but as he freely acknowledges "When you spend more time with other people's pooh than you do with your own wife you've got to pay the penalty." And it's not as if the rest of his family are going to be up for any awards. His constantly nagging dad's emotional bank account only has two cents in it and his brother can't even stand to spend a single night with them.

The comedy mock-doc is a hard beast to get right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life at the bottom. 5 Feb 2009
This is the funniest film I've seen since The Rutles ... and that was a long time ago. The acting will make you stop and think 'Is this a documentary?'. In parts like 'The Office' but without the claustrophobic atmosphere and oaf-like central character, it oozes warm-hearted empathy for Kenny (Shane Jacobson), the lovable sanitation engineer, and the clever script deftly handles the line between pathos and slapstick and, of course, toilet humour. Not to say you couldn't watch this with your Gran. I (and my Gran) will be looking out for more of Shane and Clayton Jacobson in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stone cold classic... Aussie style! 20 Feb 2008
Format:DVD|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The story of Kenny Smyth, an average 'Aussie Bloke' getting along in the world, is a film which came at me sideways and filled an evening with unexpected mirth! This is a very modern tale, about a man who finds delight in developing expertise in a (seemingly) mundane existence as a 'Sh*t Kicker', delivering and managing portable toilets for festivals etc. The pleasure in having a job you like and doing it well is brought out through Kenny's tenacity and humility, even as he gets treated like the very thing he's disposing of by festival goers, his family and his co-workers. This is a real tale of adversity, as Kenny has to juggle a hard job, a demanding and sickly father, a selfish brother, a difficul ex-wife, a son he rarely sees, and all the other elements of his life. That he does so with a rare falter in his grin or upbeat outlook is a real pleasure to watch. He has a way with a one liner that is to be envied, and it is his opinions and perspective on the world that make the movie and provide most of the humour.

The Jacobson's are clearly a family on the up, if this movie is anything to go by. They have somehow managed to involve three generations of their family in the making of this film (their roles echoing their real-life personas) and the chemistry and reality of their relationships is incredible. Its extremely easy to forget that Kenny and his co-stars are in fact figments, and that this is a 'mockumentary'.
Buy, rent or borrow this movie. It made a star of 'Kenny'in Australia and it deserves to do so everywhere else too.
