Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Kennedy, the violinist formerly known as Nigel, pays tribute to Kreisler, the fiddler also known as Fritz, on this disc. Of the ten pieces, six are arrangements, two are original compositions and two are hoaxes. The last track, Praeludium and Allegro, was published in 1905 as the work of Pugnani but 30 years later Kreisler admitted it was by himself. The critics were furious. The Liebesleid, now perhaps Kreisler's best-known work, was originally touted as one of three anonymous "Old Viennese Dances". The treasure of this disc is the recording of Kreisler's rarely performed String Quartet in A minor of 1919. It lasts half an hour and sounds like Ravel. Kennedy is joined by Rosemary Furniss, Bill Hawkes and Caroline Dale in a pulsating account. In 1935, it was recorded by a quartet including Kreisler himself and Kennedy's cellist grandfather Lauri Kennedy. Kennedy plays with a forthright bow, dry, weeping tone, judicious vibrato and bold sense of phrase. Nothing is as sad as Kreisler's arrangement of Cyril Scott's Lotus Land nor as lyrical as the Londonderry Air. Also included here is violinist Katharine Gowers performing Herberger's Midnight Bells, where her tone is warmer and her touch softer than Kennedy's. The pianist John Lenehan unobtrusively accompanies everything applicable. --Rick Jones

Sorry-- this is no erudite review of the life of Kreisler, misnomered concertos, etc. It is one
of awe in how Kennedy demands emotion out of every piece. He sends one soaring, birdlike, then crashing, then sensual, ecstatic. He can attack with raw power, then back off again nudging emptiness to fill with sound. Amazing. A master of life, as personified through the music of Kreisler. MUST BUY!

Certainly one of the most powerful and moving renditions. 13 Feb 1999

Admittedly this is a short review of the recording. What Kennedy manages to do on this CD (and especially remembering that all the tracks bar the quartet are recorded LIVE) is simply stunning. A couple of the tracks are admittedly rarely recorded. My definite favourite is Kennedy's Praeludium und Allegro which I believe to achieve perfection in that piece. I have never heard an artist pour so much life and soul and yet maintain that all important technique. Other great versions of this particular piece come from Kyung Wha Chung as well as Midori. The quartet is seldom heard and quite worthwhile listening especially from Kennedy. As the album states his grandfather was the celloist on the original recording with Kreisler and perhaps the quartet appropriately appears on Kennedy's album.

Kreisler + Kennedy = Genius x 2 21 Nov 2006
By wordsandmusic - Published on Amazon.com

This is a very accessible selection of Kreisler's work, but also satisfying. Kennedy's "mad genius" style of playing is perfectly suited to these pieces. After hearing an album like this, it's very, very hard to understand why he isn't more highly regarded among the classical cognoscenti. Kennedy remains among the very few who treat classical music as a living, malleable art form. Say what you want about his character, his music is always interesting. And the liner notes are hilarious!

This is a fantastic album where you will find the magical music of Kreisler played by one of the great violinists of our time that combines a perfect technic with a marvelous sentimental playing!
