I had the honor, as the U.S. Embassy's Public Affairs officer of hosting Kirsten Johnson in Albania several years ago. In addition to playing for then President Alfred Moisiu among other dignitaries, she provided master classes for aspiring music students in the capital and elsewhere throughout the country. Johnson has the unique ability to bridge international societies through her role as a 'cultural ambassador', in addition to attracting large crowds with her outstanding talent as a concert pianist. Balkan audiences thoroughly enjoyed the repertoire from her "Kėngė: Albanian Piano Music" CD, and admittedly, I have become smitten with the selections myself. Her rendition of Papadhimitri's "Nina-Nana" comes immediately to mind as a soothing, `back to simpler times' tune that has become one of my personal favorites. If one is unfamiliar either with Albanian composers or Johnson's work, this seminal oeuvre is a must-have for any collection.
