Format: Audio CD
A rewarding mix to twentieth century piano masterpieces from on this disc. Rachmaninov's Corelli variations are taught, concise expressions of the composer's American years. Kempf is less concerned with dazzling us than probing into the music, isolating the disparate character of each variation and clarifying the texture. There are perhaps lusher, more overtly virtuosic interpretations from Berman or Pletnev, yet Kempf's steely insight has much merit.

His performance of the monsterous Chaconne transcription sounds like a performance from someone who can play original violin masterpiece. I know Freddy used to be an accomplished fiddler though I have no idea if he still plays. Never mind, this is a pianist's homage to the great violin work that doesn't forget the violin's line.

The wisful Ravel Waltzes are delicately spun in an intimate performance that's very appealing. Stravinsky's bustling transcription of his balletic masterpiece is one of the toughest works in the repertoire. Freddy doesn't quite have the razor sharp reflexes of a Sokolov or Pollini but this is a performance is colourful and characterful.

A good choice for fans of this repertoire and the legion of Kempf's admirers.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable disc of 20th Century piano masterpieces, expertly played and beautifully recorded.

Following on from Freddy Kempf's earlier- and highly praised - recital disc (Mussourgsky Pictures et al), he now gives us the Rachmaninov Corelli Variations, a pyrotechnic Busoni transcription of the sublime Bach Chaconne (from the violin partita no 2), the Ravel Valses nobles et Sentimentales and - finally - three fiery fragments from Stravinsky's Petrushka.

You can reliably expect technical excellence here, and Kempf delivers in spades; bulldozing extreme technical difficulties aside, he carries off these pieces with great aplomb and virtuosity; but there is also much sensitive music-making and subtlety in evidence.

BIS has given us very fine piano sound - not too distant, but not in your lap, either. It is also beautifully focussed, transparent and offers a huge dynamic range. In fact, it is tempting to up the volume and rattle the walls- always a good sign! (auditioned on stereo SACD layer).

So, if the repertoire appeals, you can't really go wrong here.
