Product Description

The best-selling pack in the Kelty lineup is also the best-selling pack in the outdoor industry…for good reason. Highly utilitarian, the Women's Redwing has all the features and organization needed for simplified travel or an overnight on the trail. With a full-access U-zipper, the Redwing works both as top loader and a panel loader, depending on whether you have the top compression straps clipped or not, adding convenience to any adventure. Organization is the name of the game for the Women's Redwing with zippered side pockets, zippered stash pocket, large front pocket with organization for small items, and the large pocket on the top of the pack. You'll also stay hydrated for any adventure with the hydration compatible design and the water bottle pockets on the side. When you are on the go, the carry handle makes it easy to grab your pack out of where you've stowed it for your trip.
Finally, the Redwing suspension is designed for all day carry comfort. The load is kept off your shoulders and support is provided with the LightBeam single aluminum stay and HDPE frame sheet. The dynamic AirFlow back panel and AirMesh on the women's specific shoulder straps, dual density foam waist belt, and lumbar pad will keep you cool when you are working hard. Finally, the load lifters/stabilizers, hip belt stabilizer straps, sternum straps, and Scherer Cinch waist buckle will help customize the fit and keep the load close to your center of gravity.
This backpack is constructed from 420D Polyester Ball Shadow body fabric and 450D Polyester Oxford Reinforcement Fabric.

Perfect for Carry-On 8 May 2014

I did a lot of research before deciding on a pack to bring with me on a college course trip to Peru. We will be living in various hostels and locations for two weeks. When flying, I always have a fear of my checked luggage getting lost, delayed, or damaged, so this time I wanted to bring all my baggage as carry on (and I figured my trip would be much more enjoyable without constantly hassling with a bunch of stuff). I'm planning on bringing this pack as well as an over-the-shoulder bag onto the plane.

After receiving my pack, the thing I like the best is the large zipper that opens up the main compartment for such easy accessibility. I will be able to see the majority of all the items packed in my bag by just opening this one zipper. Also, you can't see from the picture, but there are-holes?-in between the two side zip pockets and the main part of the backpack. This is where I plan to keep my microfiber towel in case it is still a little damp when I pack up and move.

This will be my first traveling experience with extensive walking and hiking, so I'm curious as to what my experience will be like when I hike around with this on my back for long periods.

I will update my review after the trip.

Had a great time in Peru! It was also a great feeling to have only carry-on luggage with me. I brought less luggage than anyone in the group and I still felt like I had plenty of things with me.

The pack fit onto all of the plane rides although some of the smaller planes I had to push the pack a bit to get into the overhead compartments. On my flight back to the States I had a day-long layover in New York, so I decided to check my pack instead of carrying it around the city for the day. Thankfully my pack didn't suffer any scuffing, tears, or other damage by being checked or during the rest of my Peru trip.

I'm so happy with my purchase. The only way I could see the pack being made better would be to have little storage pouches in the waist belt for easy access to a phone or other items.

I love this backpack! Very well made, holds quite a bit. I packed for an 8 day trip using just this pack and was still able to comfortably carry it. It fits under the seat on an airplane. Looking forward to taking this on a hike!

Good Travel and Day Hiking Backpack 2 Mar 2014

I'm planning for a 3 week Western Europe travel via Eurorail. I finally decided on Kelty Redwing 40L. I like it - plenty room to store all my items. The black color looks good and matches to my black and gray color scheme perfectly. I tried other colors and they seem too loud. For past few weeks, I walked my dogs for 2 to 3 hours each day carrying fully loaded Kelty ~20 lbs (no, my pups won't be with me in Europe). The hip belt really helps to distribute the weight. Before Kelty, I was using a backpack with no hip belt which caused aching shoulders in no time. Kelty has a good back ventilation, but my back still gets sweaty. Next time, I will look for a better back ventilation system. For my needs, Kelty will satisfy moderate walks in London, Paris, Rome, etc in Sept/Oct temperature. Hence, this is a good day-hiking backpack in cool months. Kelty has good straps and nice setup to fine tune to your body. After you-tubing on how to wear a backpack, I see that Kelty's strap system is excellent and very easy to adjust. I really like the hip cinch setup. I can make the hip belt tighter to distribute the weight to the hip. This allows to give gap in my back for ventilation. Previously I tightened the should straps too much and made my shoulders ache but also blocked back from ventilating.

Couple things I wish this backpack had were hip belt pockets and a rain cover. Now, I just need to make sure that I don't carry more than I need to. Even with Kelty's nice strap system, 20 lbs really burns your leg muscles after a couple of hours!

The backpack is a good, sturdy backpack 24 Aug 2014

The backpack is a good, sturdy backpack, but I feel as if it is more suitable for hiking than travelling. I bought the pack for a 3 week backpacking tour around Europe, however, as soon as it arrived I realized that the zippers cannot lock. You can lock it around the rubber bands used to open/close the bag but those could be easily cut or even untied by hand. The bag itself fits comfortably, although, I am very small so the waist belt and shoulder straps did not fit perfectly against my frame. Overall however the bag will do its job, just wish it came with a rain cover/lockable zippers.

Before I left I went to home depot and made the backpack lockable using cable wire and some little round things whose name I can't recall, (you can find a tutorial online by searching the name of the backpack and lockable). Let me just say that the bag has become my best friend, it was super comfortable and felt lighter and lighter each day (maybe I was just losing stuff along the way lol). I had no problems whatsoever, LOVED IT. My backpacking companion for hopefully the next 10 years or so. :)

Excellent backpacking for young ladies 13 Aug 2014

I purchased this bag for my 11 year old daughter to go on backpacking trips with me. The torso length is not adjustable, so you'll need to make sure that it's right for you or your youngster. The build quality is fantastic!

I do not plan on her carrying the backpacking tent, since either her older siblings, mom, or myself will carry the tent she will share. That being said, the 40L pack gives her plenty of room for a 2L hydration bladder, backpacking sleeping bag, clothes, food, and other personal effects. I love that the bottom of the pack has great weaving straps you can use to tie down items like a rolled up sleeping pad. You'll need to buy straps, but those are cheap, and you can get them anywhere. The side mesh pockets are very easy to retrieve items from even while the pack is on. All in all, a wonderful purchase decision.

On a side note, I own the Kelty Coyote 80 and love it! I was so inspired by the Kelty backpack collection and features, I just had to buy this one.
