Product Description

Book Description

A sensitively written true story by a RAF Bomber Command wartime R/T operator who talked down the crews on their return from operations, met them off duty and so often, mourned their loss within days. The book sparkles with anecdotes and humour yet has a very special poignancy as the author reiterates her deep admiration for these truly remarkable men of Bomber Command.

surpringsly super 12 July 2005
Format:Paperback
I had been reading books about life in bomber command from the point of view of the air crews in ww2 when i came across this book. I wasnt sure if i would enjoy it but decided that it could be interesting to read about some of the other sides of life there. How glad i was that i made that choice. The book kept me going from cover to cover, Pip Becks memories of life as a member of the waaf during ww2 is a superb account of what it was like. from an early age she joined up and was exposed to new things some great and some so tragic. She came to know so many pilots and crew that cruelly never returned from missions each time experiencing a loss. Yet Pip and many others like her kept on going providing a vital service. There were also fun times aswell wich do come out in this book. With a good blend of humour and sadness Pip becks account of life in the waaf is a cracking and easy read and would i reccomend to anyone.

WAAF story 11 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
If you had a female relative who served in the WAAF and want to find out what life was like for her, this book is a well-written and easy read, painting a picture of the experience of young women who left home for a regimented life. It records emotions, the shock of going from a cosy home to a military life, and the impact of the war on the women who served, not just the men who risked or gave their lives. My mother spoke very little of her experiences, and nothing of the trauma and I just wished I had read this when she was still alive to talk to her about it. It was a very emotional read for me.

A gem 27 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
I am glad that this book has been very favourably reviewed here. I was born just after the War into an RAF family, and have been reading about the wartime RAF ever since I was old enough to read 'grown-up' books. This is a well-written book but I would have devoured it even if it were not, I cannot get enough of learning about those times, depressing though it is to compare them to our own. I don't know if you're reading this, Pip, but I love your book, and keep it on the same shelf as 'No Moon Tonight', surely the greatest account ever written of what it was like for 'ordinary' aircrew at the sharp end of Bomber Command.
