It's a common misconception that tortoises are easy to keep. In fact their special care needs mean pet tortoises often suffer from neglect. This book, 'Keeping A Pet Tortoise' should help owners keep on the straight and narrow. Written by Andrew and Nadine Highfield it explains how to set up a home for the pet and keep in the best of health. --Pet Gazette

A 'one-stop' source of advice and valuable guidance on all aspects of keeping a wide variety of tortoise species including essential information on protection on the species in the wild, export bans and buying with confidence from reputable vendor. Reliable advice from two top experts in the field. Andy and Nadine Highfield run the Tortoise Trust in the UK and lecture widely on tortoise conservation and captive management. --Pet Trade World

Interpet Publishing has released 'Keeping A Pet Tortoise', the second in a series of pet care guides that launched last year with the publication of 'Keeping Pet Chickens'. Tortoises have never been easy to care for, Interpet said, 'As their dietary requirements are very precise. It claimed that the book would help to instruct repsonsible owners on keeping their pets healthy as well as informing potention tortoise-owners about buying from a reputable source and and avoiding banned and protected species.' Interpet said 'Although tortoises have been popular pets for many years, they have never been easy pets to look after. All reptiles have very precise environmental and dietary requirements and tortoises are no exception.' This new book is ideal for all tortoise enthusiasts (and provides) accessible information for responsible store owners to supply to customers. The 64-page hard-backed book includes information on well-known Mediterranean and tropical species and 130 colour photos of tortoises including infants breaking out of their shells and an x-ray image of a femail laying on a cluster of eggs. The guide is written by Tortoise Trust founders Andrew and Nadine Highfield. The husband-and-wife team has kept tortoises for nearly 30 years. Andrew Highfield has also written a number of books and specific papers on tortoises as well as contributing regularly to many of the major reptile publications. --Glee Wire

Great Little book 18 May 2009
Format:Hardcover
Anyone starting out with a pet tortoise would benefit from reading this book. It gives a lot of detail about different breeds of tortoise. It is a very easy book to read with loads of photos, it is laid out well and in a logical manner. It starts with different breeds and what their natural habitats are like, how to choose a healthy tortoise and how to tell what sex it is. It then goes on to discuss outdoor housing and the need to make it secure and tortoise friendly.
It then illustrates how to house them in an indoors environment, the importance of warmth, humidity and most important the correct diet. A few tips on hibernation, both indoor and outdoor, will put most peoples mind at rest and these are well addressed as is waking up from hibernation as well.
There are a couple of pages on tortoise breeding, which is very interesting, though further information would be needed for a beginner.
All in all this is a very good book for anyone wanting the best for their pet. It is written by two leaders in the field of tortoise husbandry. It is meticulously referenced and for the price represents excellent value for money.
You won't be disappointed.

Good 19 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
A book with lots of information about tortoises. I wished it could be a bit more basic eg a list of foods tortoises eat, instead of 'they eat leaves and herbs'. Yes which ones?!! But generally good.
