DVD Description

Walter Goodfellow (Rowan Atkinson), the well meaning vicar of the parish of Little Wallop, is so obsessed with writing the perfect sermon that he is oblivious to his wife Gloria’s (Kristin Scott Thomas) dalliance with her brash golf instructor Lance (Patrick Swayze); neither does he notice that his daughter Holly has a different boyfriend every week, and his young son Petey is the whipping boy for the school bullies.

Gloria feels her life is spiralling out of control. She is sick of the incessant barking of the dog next door, her loveless marriage and her adolescent kids’ escapades – she prays every night for salvation. Enter Grace (Maggie Smith), the answer to the family’s prayers: a sweet grey haired old lady, the charming and discreet new housekeeper, who has her own unique definition of keeping house – and a very unusual way of solving problems

I saw this movie in the cinema and laughed all the way through it. It is one of the best movies I have seen this year. Rowan Atkinson and Maggie Smith are brilliant, as is Patrick Swayze, who plays the pervy Golf Instructor.

Rowan Atkinson plays a village priest, who is so busy dealing with his parishioners and his work that he does not realise his wife is feeling neglected and thinking of starting an affair with her golf instructor, his son is being bullied in school and is daughter is turning into a bit of a tart. In comes Maggie Smith as Grace, the families new housekeeper and as soon as she arrives, she starts fixing the families various problems in her own 'special' way.

A very good story line with a twist and a very funny ending.

A must see movie. You will love it.

What an excellent film! I have just watched it and i laughed through most of it- it really epitomised subtle, British comedy. The cast are excellent, Rowan Atkinson shows his talent as a serious actor and Dame Maggie Smith is her usual resplendent self (I'm not sure there are any actors in the new generation who will ever come close to the calibre of her or Judi). I recommend this film to those who like a bit of classic, dark commedy involving village curtain-twitching and making cups of tea. Actually, igore that, i challenge anyone not to enjoy this film. It's such an antidote to the tiresome american blockbusters featuring Tom Cruise and Will Smith saving the world from aliens (again) and I entirely enjoyed it. Even my grumpy better half who did'nt want to see it laughed his way through it. Brilliant.

TOP BRITISH COMEDY! 3 April 2006
Format:DVD
I have enjoyed watching this hilarious movie. This really is a top British comedy. Rowan Atkinson, Kristin Scott Thomas and Patrick Swayze are at their best here, but the woman who really steals the show is Maggie Smith. The way she is dressed alone immediately put a smile on my face. The movie contains some great scenes and I can heartily recommend it to everyone who likes a good laugh. This is one movie that fans of British humour must have in their collection!

Slowish Pace, But Funny
I would almost say that this was a nice, gentle family film - except for the odd f-bomb and a bit of nudity. But it's funny. Read more
