Synopsis
In actor Edward Norton's directorial debut, Brian (Norton), a priest, and his best friend, Jake (Ben Stiller), a rabbi, both fall in love with their long-lost childhood friend, Anna (Jenna Elfman), who has returned to Manhattan to pursue her hectic business career. However, Brian has taken a vow of celibacy, and Jake is constantly being set up by Jewish mothers in his temple. The workaholic Anna isn't Jewish, but this doesn't stop her from returning Jake's affection and beginning a relationship that they hide from Brian. As their relationship progresses, complications arise, leading Jake, Brian, and Anna to deal with questions of both religious and romantic faith.
As Rabbi Jake, Stiller once again displays his excellent comic timing, and his scenes with Elfman, Norton, and Anne Bancroft (as Jake's traditional Jewish mother) carry KEEPING THE FAITH. Set in lushly filmed New York City, Norton's film exhudes an innocent charm that's sure to please audiences of all denominations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good, 13 April 2005
By bernie "xyzzy" (Arlington, Texas) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
I have to admit I started watching this movie with a less than positive attitude. My previous encounters with Ben Stiller were either getting certain appendages stuck in zippers or having crocodilian's crispy heads removed geek style. I recognized Jenna Elfman from "Krippendorf's Tribe" (1998). So I was ready for some wasted film.
After holding my breath and waiting for it to hit. I soon realized that this was a well put together movie with a good story plot and excellent execution. I was amazed at the people that were in this movie. Half the time I keep saying "oh look there is" Anne Bancroft, Eli Wallach, and many others.
Basic story of three childhood friends. One went away and the other two chose to become (now don't laugh) a priest and a rabbi. The one that went away (Anna Riley) returns as a business executive and has a magnetic personality with accoutrements to match.
The fun and the drama is when two and a half become more than friend. How will they and their world react to this? What makes the movie is not the story as much as how it is executed. And it seems that I need to re-evaluate Ben Stiller as he did a fine job with just the minimum of "spectacles, testicles, watch, wallet".

4.0 out of 5 stars romantic,witty and very upbeat, 19 Jul 2006
By dan the fan (england,uk) - See all my reviews

Ben Stiller plays a rabbi who takes one look at a non-Jewish childhood friend,he hasn't seen for a couple of decades, and decides she's hot enough to burn in hell for! This is a film with a lot of wit in it,and is actually more about the survival of a friendship between three people as they put each other through various trials and tribulations.A very positive film - no cliches or cynical jabs thrown at Synagogues, rabbis, priests or churches by the script(indeed Ben Stiller and Edward Norton spent a lot of time in synagogues and churches at real-life services before making Keeping The Faith) - with a simple message:don't let your religion get in the way of your heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this movie!, 27 Nov 2002
By A Customer
I'm probably biased as this film sees two of my favorite stars working together, the amazingly talented Edward Norton and the comedic brilliance that is Ben Stiller, but I absolutley adore this movie. If you're looking for a deep, incredibly complex storyline and Oscar type performances then this isn't for you. But if you want to sit back with a glass of wine and enjoy a great movie then I'd recommend this wholeheartedly. It is a complete feel good movie that has pleanty of rewatch value and brings something for all ages, along with a great message that no matter what your faith, love can overcome all boundries.
