Product Description

Buying a coffee for down-and-out 'Alkie' Albie at Marylebone Station is Fran Varady's good deed for the day.  But when the grateful Albie takes her into his confidence, Fran suddently finds herself launched on her second investigation.   For Albie, though obviously fond of a drink and none too familiar with soup and water, is absolutely clear about one thing - he claims to be the only witness to the violent abduction of a young girl.

Although the police scornfully dismiss Albie's story as alcoholic hallucinations, Fran is determined to follow it up.  And her suspicions seem to be spot on when she is warned off by her old sparring partner, Sergeant Parry, and then approached by a boyhood friend of her late father's, distraught over the kidnapping of his daughter.  But this is only the beginning of Fran's investigation - days later, Alkie Albie is found dead ...

Keeping bad company is the second novel by Ann Granger that is based on an investigation by character - Fran Varady. A passing casual conversation with a tramp on a railway station, leads Fran on a search for a missing girl. This is fired up by a sense of achieving justice for the tramp after he is found drowned in a canal, which Fran believes is not co-incidence. The dialogue weaves in and out of the main characters personalities, whom the author describes in an engaging and detailed fashion which make up for the lack of realism in how the plot unfolds. The plot appears unlikely not only in how Fran miraculosly escapes danger on several occasions but, also, in how she gains the information necessary to make her deductions. Saying this, I did enjoy reading the book which has enough twists and counter plots to ensure that interest is maintained. Part of my diappointment could have been the comparism with the Mitchell/ Markaby series by the same

author, which had seemed more believable. If the idea from the author had been to identify with a younger target reader group, by using an unemployed, young investigator/ heroine, I am not sure that this was achieved. Although Fran comes over as a dynamic, outward going personality, her lifestyle does not match this, leaving me as the reader to doubt the authenicity.

I enjoyed this novel [the third Fran Varady story I've read, though this is only the second of the series]. Having moved from her dismal hard-to-let council flat near Jubilee Street, Fran has gone considerably up-market to a basement flat in Camden. However, she still manages to get involved with people who end up causing her trouble of one sort or another. Her friend, Ganesh is a reluctant accomplice and PC Parry continues to be the bane of Fran's life, but ultimately, Fran herself is the star of the story. This is a well-written crime novel without being gory or graphic.

This was my second Fran Varady novel and I really enjoyed it. I found the plot and characters entirely believable - I know from experience that when you're scared witless you find a burst of energy you never knew you had (I was chased by a herd of cows once and vaulted a high gate in one leap). I like the heroine's slightly jaundiced scepticism and the humour and wit, which I feel balances out the grimmer side nicely. I will be buying the rest of the series.
