4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but could do better. 9 April 2008
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Nice book with lots of photos. Unfortunately the much of the information with regard to photos did not mention the breed of birds shown. I would have liked to have more detail in the captions. Some of the specific breeds mentioned had no photo at all. I wasn't interested in the chapter on crafts.
My husband preferred this book to "The Right Way to Keep Chickens" by Virginia Shirt because it was easier to absorb and photo's are much better than drawings. He said it was a good book, I am hard to please!

I was so much more impressed by this book than I thought I would be. I got it as a nice coffee table book, but found out that it is loaded with all the information needed to keep a healthy, happy flock in your garden, whether as pets and enjoyment or for profit.... and gorgeous photos!!

It has a transcontinental flavour (I don't know if the authors are American or British, but the spelling is British and lists of suppliers are provided for both UK & US, etc.) and offers history, breed advice, a very good amount of health and hygiene information, as well as tips on housing and guidelines for feeding, and information on culling and cooking too. Everything you need to make the choice whether or not to have chickens is here -- and I will stress again how lovely the photos are.

Would make a perfect gift for someone you know who is thinking about it and wants some more information and advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clucking Eggcellent 21 Jan 2009
I loved this book, it's informative and while conveying the seriousness of caring for stock there's also the fun element which in my view is very important. All the main aspects are covered from housing and cleaning to feeding and breeding and although rich in information its presented in a manner that will not intimidate the novice. The photographs are spectacular and a quick flick through is enough to produce a smile or two ( I didn't realise it possible to have warm and fuzzy feelings about chickens, must watch that !!)

On a more sombre note, I have found myself on a quest to convince the wife of the benefits of chicken rearing and although my chances looked bleak for quite some time I think this book may tip the odds in my favour !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeping Chickens a Lovely beginners book! 5 Jun 2009
I warmly recomend Keeping Chickens,it was a lovely illustrated book, with the different breeds and starter information with what to think about and breed background given.

I read the book from cover to cover and I have to say that I've used it on several occasions as a reference on illness and feeding issues.

This is an introduction to keeping chickens and poultry needs, it also will give you some nice references back to other books and organisations for further more in depth facts or information.

My family loved the book and I could easily share with my children.

I used it for the new coop designs and what to think about and we signed our daughter up to one of the youth poultry organisation competitions that's mentioned in the book :)

Overall we very pleased and have used and will use Keeping Chickens often.

i wouldn't say I was a complete novice chicken keeper but I was looking for a book that had a good range of breed descriptions and was really pleasantly surprised at this book,

First of all, the photography is superb, all beautiful big full colour pictures which seems rare in these kind of books. As mentioned by someone else though, I would have liked to have seen some captions, particuarly with reference to the breeds featured and I was diappointed (and surprised!) that some of the breeds talked about in the breed section didn't have any pictures at all (it's very hard to picture what a bird looks like just from it's description!).

I wasn't expecting the craft chapter at the book but it is really lovely and having young children, it's given me some great ideas and I can't wait to have a go at the feather print cards, they are stunning. T

Th information in the book isn't as detailed as I personally need but it is superbly written and a great book for beginners and it's a lovely book to flick through, feels like heavy good quality, would look great on a coffee table. All in all, I rate it very highly, just a few bits missing (captions, no info on incubation) that has brought it down to four stars, highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeping chickens 26 Oct 2009
The book arrived in a few days and in great condition. It is a must read for anyone buying ex-batts who has no poultry keeping experience, like me. This book can be read from front to back or just dipped into at the sections of most interest or when you want to check something out ie. on feeding regimes etc., which I do when unsure of something. I know it will prove a good investment for looking after my girls.
