Call of Cthulhu is surely one of the most loved and celebrated roleplaying games around. When many bore of cutting through a 1000 kobalds randomly generated in a 10m by 10m room, they turn to this master of the horror genre. Inspired by the eldritch fiction (?) of HP Lovecraft, Call of Cthulhu is set to enter its 30th year in print.

Adiv players and keepers will always want good solid support material to add depth, spice and ultimately terror to their adventures. The keeper companion 1 is a fine addition to such a library.

The keeper companion 2 is not so good. So slim it begs the question why not wait till more information were available to thicken it up, and crippled by a specificity that means the times you'll actually get it down to read are few and far between. Sections on prohibition are well researched but far too long for the majority to be used in regular play (unless cthulhu starts hooch running!), guns are described in detail (much of which has be similarly available before), a short section on mythos tomes, spells and creatures is interesting but is exactly that, as is another section on mythos machines (Mi-go origins etc).

The greatest fury at this bok is the useless 30 pages (out of 160 - thats about £2.98 to you and me) of lists of references to items and people in the mythos - NOT INFORMATION, just lists. Unless you possess every document on the list is proves useless - post this on a website not in 30 pages of what I want to be hard core 'useful' gaming support material.

My final advice is that not possessing this book will make no difference to your gaming. Get companion 1 as it's much more useful and better value for money.

Keeper companion 2 strikes me as all the left overs from the first tacked together to extract more money from loyal fans. AVOID!

the good and bad 2 Oct 2010

I don't like the fact that almost a 3rd. of the book is about prohibition. if your campain isn't based around it then it's just alittle infomative. other than that it's great it even gives you a referance list for tombs, creatures, npc's, and what era they appered in. on top of that it has an exsencive list of firearms.
