More About the Author

Hello Readers,
I would guess if you are searching around behind the scenes like this, you've read a bit of me and would like to know more. Well, what can I say? I'm still seeing patients around the world although mostly in my Sydney clinic (because I live there) and also in my country Back-in-a-Week retreats in the Upper Hunter Valley in New South Wales several times a year (You know, it's not such a bad idea to combine coming here for treatment with a trip around Australia if you live in far off lands. Imagine flying in from the UK or the USA, getting your back fixed and then swanning off to look at Ayers Rock! Even if you don't want to go that far inland, you get a great feeling of the Outback from my place 'Fernleigh'. Have a look on the website Remember too, I also see patients at Britain's best boutique hotel {so say Conde Naste} at 'Hotel Tresanton' in Cornwall in the UK).

If you are interested, you must look at my new app, The Back App, for iPhones and iPads. You'll find it on either of my websites. Here you can see me talking to you about all things lower back and it is the first of very many to come - thoracic spines, neck and all the body joints like wonky knees or tennis elbow.

Plans are afoot for a text-book but I'm taking it easy for a bit longer before I throw myself into that.

I very highly recommend this book to all Amazon buyers who have a body and wish to look after it. But................

It is exactly and precisely the same book as 'Body In Action' by the same author. I think this should be made clear on the cover of the book (and not just in small print inside.)

I bought it thinking it was a ''new'' title (a totally new book) written by the author of 'Body in Action'.......whereas it is in fact the old book with a new title.

2.0 out of 5 stars Word of caution 23 May 2011
By Marion
Whilst this book obviously helps many joint pain sufferers, I feel that a word of caution needs to more prominently feature in the book. For example, persisting with the 'knee walking' exercise, through the pain as recommended, resulted in knee bursitis, which has taken three months to clear. The hip exercises have also resulted in more pain and problems than when I began the programme. Horses for courses but this book obviously wasn't right for me.
Incidentally, am finding the Alexander Technique a great help.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good investment 11 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am using this book every day. The exercises really work and I find the detailed background info useful. The only reason I did not give this book five stars was that some of the exercise instructions are hard to understand - once you work out what they mean they are great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for anyone with middle aged joints 9 Dec 2009
I was recommended this book by a friend with a frozen shoulder as I have had a dodgy knee and neck problems. Although I have had good advice from physiotherapists, they often don't have time to explain exercises in full. This book tells you everything about how your joints work and how they go wrong - which can happen from our restricted habits of movement or from sports strain. It then gives you graded exercises based on yoga postures with really detailed descriptions of how to do it correctly. The book has really given me the motivation to do the exercises regularly, both to improve my dodgy joints and avoid trouble in the future. Essential for anyone over 50!

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and very educational. 30 May 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I resisted buying this book for several months having already read quite a few relating to joint problems, most of which describe joint anatomy and problems in a very similar way. This book is different and I am very glad I eventually bought it. Sarah Keys explains joint problems so much more clearly than other writers. She is also a very good writer. Her first page made me smile at the mental pictures she created. You know reading this book that every word has been chosen with care.
I am surprised she is less cautious than other writers about the excercises she recommends, having been used to the standard words of warning in other self-help books, but I suppose she is crediting the readers with a certain intelligence. I can see that the knee-walking exercise (commented on by another reviewer) could cause problems which Ms Keys should maybe have included a health warning about. But the message that we can reverse the effects of fairly major degeneration is a very welcome one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone should have this book 18 Dec 2009
I always have this book on hand in my physiotherapy practice, and I recommend it to all my patients. I've not yet had a single patient who hasn't responded to a combination of these exercises and hands-on therapy - follow Sarah's instructions at or before the first sign of a niggle, and you could save yourself a lot of money in physio fees! There are other books which explain techniques and ideas I find helpful when I'm dealing with traumatic or complex injuries, but for the vast majority of cases, these simple and effective yoga-based exercises get to the nub of the problem and eradicate it without the need for expensive or specialist equipment.

Of course, it's not a panacea for all injuries, and doesn't replace input from a professional if your injury is severe enough to need hands-on treatment or surgery; but it's a great adjunct to both of those and in many cases is all you're likely to need.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ah! so that's why 18 May 2009
By Yogi
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this following a recommendation from another yoga teacher. The book goes through teach major joint and explains the structure, how it works, what typically goes wrong and how to help if you've injured it at 3 different levels. Easy to read clearly illustrated and very practicial.
I shall certainly recommend it to other IYENGAR yoga teachers, as well as students. I've already lent mine to a tennis player with elbow strain.
