Hard To Beat! 17 Aug. 2012
By The Music Man - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I rarely write reviews on Amazon but seeing that so few people have reviewed this CD (which I just listened to for the first time), I had to make an exception.

I realize there are other English Beat compilations out there.... And I realizetoo that this one came out as sort of an adjunct to the box set. But that said, I think "Keep the Beat" stands as a great single-disc collection. Most of the band's signature songs ("Mirror in the Bathroom," "I Confess," "Tears of a Clown," "Save it for Later") are here, along with some very good lesser known tracks. I for one was thrilled to see "End of the Party" included; it may not be the Beat's best known song and it may not be as uptempo as most of their material, but it's beautiful. It's also proof that this band could make quality music even when they weren't skanking! Sure, there are a couple of top-tier tunes that are missing but that can be said of almost any compilation.

To sum up, I would say that if you want an album that serves as a good intro to The English Beat -- or if you can't afford the box set -- this is an ideal place to start.

As a postscript.... I've had the pleasure of getting to know Dave Wakeling, the band's leader, a bit. He's not only a talented artist who is still out there playing; he's also one of the most personable guys you'll meet. Cheers!

I had forgotten about the english beat until the olympics. Great to hear the songs again. Mirror in the bathroom was so familiar, and Save It For Later of course is a great song.

Another Beat This 21 July 2012
By David D. McFarland - Published on Amazon.com

Seems the English Beat are pretty hot again with the reissues, my thoughts are this has been done ad least 6 times already (From "What Is Beat" to this one). Nevertheless, the album is solid as far as tracks go but the previous releases basically have the same tracks except one here or there. Ad least this has "Jeanette" on it. some missed that track altogether. Anyway, this one is a good compilation to get, as I say, there are ad least 6 compilations released by them to choose from which "What Is Beat" is my favorite compilation (has different versions not common to the album versions),along with "Beat This" but frankly with this one you can have basically the same tracks. If your a collector, try all the reissues UK albums and the US box set. The casual fan will like this one. I give it 5 stars for the music and mastering and 1 for just another compilation. My rating a 3 star.
Drop by my website sometime for a visit @ "JudeMac Forever".

The Beat aka The English Beat 30 July 2013

From doing the clubs around town to hitting the big stage. So much fun along the way. Saxo on Saxophone was a true treat. After the broke up they formed two bands, General Public and The Fine Young Cannibals. The energy and political satire were perfect for the era.

I usually don't get greatest hits, but this one is great. It had all the songs I wanted and more.
