Product Description

When Bert Lane (Ronald Shiner) is given the task of advertising Mrs Anstey s famous crumpets, he decides to focus on the sexy side of crumpets. But his tawdry advertising slogans incur the wrath of Mrs Anstey and her Purity League, as well as his boss (James Hayter). Having tried every trick in his wheeler/dealer book to win her back over with charm, Bert has to face an angry posse of female morality campaigners catching up with him in a striptease joint! Throw Vi Tarbottom (Joan Sims) and Slogger O Reilly (Denis Shaw) into the mix and a feast of British comic chaos is guaranteed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ronald Shiner keeps it clean 31 Oct 2008
Made in 1955 this Ronald Shiner vehicle has all the right cast and elements to make it an entertaining farce. It works to a certain extent but Ronald Shiner seems constrained by the script which could have been funnier. James Hayter still a star from his success in The Pickwick Papers is a wonderfully exasperated as the boss. Colin Gordon is funny as the slightly potty inventor and dear old Jean Cadell is funny because she is a battleaxe. Look out for Joan Sims as, would you believe it, Vi Tarbottom and she steals the scene too. A little bit of class and sophistication is added to the proceedings by the cultivated Ursula Howells. Odeon have a good print with clear sound and an informative liner booklet. Well worth a chuckle.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very dated I am sorry to say! 22 Nov 2011
By Tin Tactoo VINE VOICE
Being a lover of old Black & White films, comedies more so, I/we found this very lacking although it was nice to see a few 'faces' that went on to better things but overall, was not impressed - I gave it three stars for the quality of the transfer to DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Your old china,Ronald Shiner 18 July 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This film will probably only appeal to those of us who are old enough to have seen it at the cinema.
I was a big fan of Ronnie Shiner and think that this is one of his best films. He sadly died quite young. James Hayter, who later gained more fame,as the voice of Mr.Kipling's cakes, overacts outrageously as his boss.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comedy classic 24 May 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This film really does what it says on the is a comedy, the situation gets steadily worse and then all is mended eventually with a lot of fifties frolics on the way, worth watching just for the costumes and the cars.
As i have never seen this film on the television it was a first for me to watch it now. If you are a fan of this era and genre, then you have an hour and a bit of viewing enjoyment ahead of you, with some very familiar faces.
