Vini has always produced good albums, but every so often he pulls off something special. 'The Return of...', 'Vini Reilly', 'Time Was Gigantic...' are obvious examples... And to that list we can now add 'Keep Breathing'... One of his most assured albums it covers most of the bases he has visited over his long career. Filigree guitars, those vocals, now more delicate than ever, rock out portions, samples, varied percussion... what more could a DC fan want? The 7 minute 'Let Me Tell You Something' fairly bursts from the speakers... 'Tuesday' is one of his finest songs... 'Lunch' features that familiar acoustic guitar work that we have loved for all those years... and there are many more examples of it throughout this album... But it's the layering of textures that sets this one apart... Rarely has Vini sounded this impeccable... Agnus Dei flows in unassumingly, with simple guitar figures and sparse vocals from Helen Farley-Jones but, given time, emerges as thing of great beauty... The delectable 'Waiting', full of longing and featuring probably Vini's finest vocal to date, makes for a perfect closer... the layered guitars as it climbs to a climax are staggering...

The Best Of collection is probably the most obvious beginning to any DC collection, but this would also make for a good starting point...
If you're a DC fan who's thinking you have enough DC albums already, you NEED this one...

Vini Reilly and the Durutti Column have long been recognised by those in the know as creators of inspired and sensitive music driven by an amazing guitar playing ability, and with lyrics infused with the sensitivity of the Mancunian soul.

Keep Breathing is possibly their most accessible album for many years, it seems largely due to the flavour lent by the much more modern production style, samples and guest vocals. This album may at last be the vehicle for the brilliance of Vini's musicianship to be shared with the wide audience it deserves.

By C. O'Brien TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Ever since debut album The Return Of The Durutti Column was released on vinyl in a sleeve made of sandpaper, the band's only permanent member Vini Reilly has seemed a touch self-destructive about his music. He recently told a British journalist that his previous CDs are " all dismal failures, I'd never consider picking them up and listening to them." And despite being a hero to such luminaries as Flea, The Edge and Brian Eno he shuns the limelight and finds reviews like this one "meaningless".

It's easy to forgive such eccentricity when you listen to music as lovely as this. Even its creator dares to admit that it might be " the first good album I've ever done." Reilly's voice has never been his strong point, but his plaintive tones hover uncertainly round guitar playing of such astonishing beauty that it literally takes the breath away - especially on the spellbinding Lunch, the intricate Neil and the gorgeous, lush Helen. Many of these tracks are named after people, presumably people Reilly knows: the lovely Maggie samples part of the ghostly Scots folksong She Moved Through The Fair, though it never quite reaches the lyric's painful conclusion. Maybe the song is a farewell to Maggie McFarlane, to whose memory the album is dedicated.

Reilly is less convincing when politically motivated - like many others (Nick Drake, Kate Bush) for whom music is a primary language, his lyrics are clumsy next to the articulacy of his playing and in songs like Gun and Big Hole, this doesn't help him put over something as prosaic as politics. But his ability to evoke an emotional landscape is astonishing, and this album casts a spell which lingers long after the music has stopped.
