On this 3 cd set we have the first 4 Sam Cooke albums for the Keen label (Sam Cooke, Encore, Tribute To The Lady and Hit Kit). The label who released this cd is picking up on the expired copy rights in Europe, so as we would expect, the sound on this cd is not top noch (most likely mastered using the old LP's or some source other then the master tapes) but it is very listenable.
Anyway, your getting 4 out of print Sam Cook albums in a 3 fold digipack for a few pounds and that's more then a good deal. Recommended!

A Real Treat, Actually! 5 May 2011
By BRADLEY J. SKISTIMAS - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is actually a really great budget buy. Bought it brand new for around ten bucks at a Amoeba in Berkley, CA. I own Portrait of a Legend, Keep Movin' On, The SAR Story set, as well as the The Man Who Invented Soul box. I had heard about the early Keen Records but never had an opportunity to buy them on CD until now. Despite reading the only review on Amazon about this collection and it being very negative with only 1 star, I bought it to judge for myself out of curiosity. Granted, the sound quality isn't nearly what the 'Soul' boxset or 'Portrait' collection has to offer, you do have a chance to complete your Cooke collection with "The Keen Records Story" for a great/fair price. My hope is that somebody cleans these recordings up as good as ABCKO in the future, but until then I will enjoy these early recordings as is. For me it's like a collection of strong B-Sides, certainly not a Sam Cooke signature hits collection, but plenty of gems and standards with his signature voice!

NOT THE SAM COOKE YOU LOVE-TRY THIS INSTEAD 19 Nov. 2010
By John - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Sam Cooke recorded on Keen Records before he received his RCA contract. All but a very few songs on The Keen Records Story 3 cd set, which includes 56 total songs, are very traditional covers of very traditional "white" songs of the 1950-60 time period. Do you remember songs titled Tammy, 'Ol Man River, and Good Morning Heartache? They are all on this 3 cd set. If you are completely and absolutely determined to own every song that Sam Cooke ever recorded, irrespective of the song's current quality, then The Keen Records Story is a good purchase, as it nicely supplements Cooke's much superior and well known RCA recordings, which are found on Portrait of a Legend (the best sound quality) and on The Man and His Music. However, if you also purchase music to enhance your own listening pleasure, do not purchase The Keen Records Story! From a listening pleasure perpective, you'll be very disappointed. If you are looking for "something different" from Sam Cooke that is still a true pleasure to listen to, purchase and appreciate The Rhythm and the Blues cd, a compilation of adult-oriented and more mellow music that feels a bit like something that Frank Sinatra might record because it swings.
