Amazon.co.uk Review

What did Jamaican reggae singer Bob Marley and Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia have in common? A love for the Kebra Negast, holy book of Ethiopian Christians and Jamaican Rastafarians. Contemporary scholars date the Kebra Negast to the 14th century, but it retells the stories of much earlier Biblical times, one very important story in particular. According to the Kebra Negast, the Israelites' Ark of the Covenant was spirited away to the ancient kingdom of Ethiopia by wise King Solomon's own son, offspring of the union between Solomon and the exotic Queen Makeda of Ethiopia (a.k.a. the Queen of Sheba). Gerald Hausman, a consummate storyteller of native traditions, presents the core narrative of the Kebra Negast, from Adam to the rise of Solomonid dynasty. On top of this, he injects his own encounters with Rastafarians during his travels in Jamaica--dreadlocked Rastas as modern-day Samsons, their unwavering faith in Jah, and a rare outsider's glimpse at the Nyabinghi ceremony. The combination of ancient tale and modern belief gives Hausman's Kebra Negast the rich flavour of enduring truth. --Brian Bruya

kebra negast ... ? 13 July 2009
Format:Hardcover
Having read the above reviews, I respect the light given to many by this book. However, having started with E. Wallis Budge the two are hardly comparable. One is a fairly good attempt at a close translation from the Ethiopian book the Kebra Negast - Glory of Kings. The other (this book) is as far as the I can see, using the name of the Kebra Negast to gain publicity and draw people in. This is not the Kebra Negast original. I am glad it has given many pleasure and insight into Rastafari - but there are many more insightful books out there on the market. This one seems fairly self indulgent to the I.

Being born and grown in england a lot of people say "why do you dreadlock your hair"? "you were not born of the way of life that many black/jamaican people were born into". But i do not belive that, Rasta come from the heart it is something that was born inside of you, and that is why you find dreadlocks people of all colour and creed, this is a fantastic read on the way of life of jamaican people phlosophy and a realistic veiw of how things were before the 1st and 2nd testement were written. *Guidence & Protection*
