Product Description

Review

"A book which should be read by every sea paddler and more." Canoeist "Extraordinary first-hand account." Cornwall Life

Product Description

This first-hand account of an epic voyage across the North Atlantic ocean in a kayak in 2001 tells the story of former SAS Sergeant Pete Bray's successful attempt to make the first ever solo unsupported crossing in a paddle-powered kayak. The author's first attempt a year earlier ended abruptly off the coast of Newfoundland when he had to be rescued. Kayak Across The Atlantic vividly describes the pain and discomfort he endured during his second attempt, encountering some of the worst weather for many years, and his sheer determination to succeed during the 76 days he was at sea.

I met Peter Bray at an "Adventure Travel" show at Olympia the year after his crossing. He had a table, a few photographs and not much else, and was trying to raise interest in his next challenge. When I casually asked what he had done I almost fell over when he told me. For what he had achieved he was little known - I though he should have been the keynote speaker, not a mere exhibitor. Perhaps this is because people confuse rowing and canoeing, but for those of us who have a little more knowledge this is one act that fully deserves to be called awesome.

Anyway now I've read and enjoyed the book. Don't expect Shakespearian prose, but rather a relatively matter-of-fact account of overcoming scepticism, set-backs and wilderness to complete a feat that may never be repeated, with some earthy (watery?) humour through in. It reminds me of reading about that mad Swede who cycled to Everest and then climed it without oxygen (Ultimate High, Goran Kropp - similar level of insanity). For anyone interested in extreme endurance adventures, this is a must read.

Quite an amazing book by an amazing man. Very readable. You can almost start to imagine the struggles he went through, although a touch of humour is maintained throughout the book.

Not just one for kayaking enthusiasts - should be a good read for anyone.

An account of such a journey does not require verbosity, as such Pete sticks to the facts and I found this really refreshing. This book has definitely inspired me to pursue my own goals.

Excellent.
