Clever band, Voivod: Political lyrics heavily disguised via intelligent science fiction concepts - definiteley a band with something to say but never preachy!
Hailing from Canada, this inventive & ingenious band have heavily influenced artists as diverse as Opeth & Emperor.
Their music is very technical & complex too; A bastard marriage of Rush, Motorhead & Slayer doesn't even come close - this is truly progressive metal with as keen a sense of melody as any of the 70's iconic bands, and an insane array of weird time signatures & rhythms that go far beyond the boundaries of metal!
Fierce, tribal drumming, progressive bass & blistering metal guitar with more than a hint of Jazz-Fusion! The late Piggy being one of extreme metal's most talented & unique guitarists! Amazing lead breaks & riffs..
Vocals are a bit strange, more melodic hardcore than traditional metal but you get used to them!
It's easy to understand Jason Newsted, formerly of Metallica, hooking up with these guys as for years they were a secret passion of his, eventually becoming good friends & bandmates. Not like he needs the money!
His bass work here is expressive, progressive & aggressive - a real stormer! Voivod's gain, Metallica's loss....
I'd also suggest the previous album, simply titled Voivod, as this was Newsted's first collaboration with these progressive thrash veterans.
Voivod are quality - I recommend Dimension Hatross (1988), Nothingface (1989) & War and Pain (1984 - VERY raucous & heavy!) if you take to this.
Newsted fans should also try Echobrain's self titled debut from 2002. Not heavy like Voivod or Metallica, just fantastic alternative rock!
