Kathy Kirby, My Story... By the Golden Girl of Pop
DVD ODNM015
The long awaited story of Kathy Kirby is now available and it makes for a fascinating and at times somewhat sad viewing. For many years Kathy has avoided the spotlight in spite of frequent requests for her to return to performing or to do chat shows. Now after over 25 years she is back on screen recalling her life and career, its ups and its downs in this Odeon Entertainment release.
The documentary includes contributions from Bruce Forsyth; Jess Conrad; Vince Hill; Ernest Maxim, Marc Almond; Sandie Shaw; Keith Altham; Chris Hutchins; Charles Blackwell; Daphne Shadwell; Frank Allen & James Harman.
The recollections are intercut with some performances and contributions from those who worked with her from the early days of stardom in Redifussion Televisions "Stars and Garters" (Vince Hill and director Daphne Shadwell) through the Kathy Kirby Show that was directed by Ernest Maxim for the BBC, working with other stars (Bruce Forsyth) and to cabaret shows and tours (Jess Conrad). The DVD also explores her working and private relationship with her manager Bert Ambrose, their highs and her lows.
Musically, all the hits are there and Kathy appears to have come to terms with both her professional and private life and now we are told lives contentedly on her own but with a band of loyal friends supporting her.
The DVD includes deleted anecdotes from Jess Conrad and Chris Hutchins plus 8 songs from ITV shows The Man I Love; Begin the Beguine; a medley of Sometimes I'm Happy; Thinking of You & More Than You Know. Come Rain or Come Shine; You Won't Find Another Fool Like Me and So Here We Go Again. It would have been good to have a liner booklet as certainly the story deserves one and for all the songs to be credited with their source and dates. But that said, this is well worth watching.
