She grows on you 30 Sep 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is a set of songs that I did not expect to feel so strongly about. They creep in on you and slowly create small universes of delight and sorrow.
Ferriers voice is not "showfantastic" but wholesome and wide in its calm, dark and fantastic homogeneous sound. Her voice can be magnificently happy or worldending sad.
You hear every word of the lyrics, they seem thought through, and are pronounced with care, great skill and love.
I can not recommend this CD enough but be aware, it will not blow your head off on the first listen, it needs time.
The vol.6 in the Kathleen Ferrier Edition with songs of Purcell, Handel, Bach, Wolf and folksongs is equally out of this world.

The voice of Kathleen Ferrier is a unique phenomenon. I believe her to have been one of the finest - if not the finest - contralto of the 20th Century.
On this CD she sings a collection of short songs ranging from arrangements of British folksongs to art songs by Roger Quilter. Particularly fine is her performance of Quilter's setting of 'Over the Mountains'. Her unaccompanied singing of 'Blow the Wind Southerly' is masterly and is so fine that no-one has since attempted the same! Perhaps it is invidious to single out these particular items; every one of the 21 songs is a real joy to hear. When Ferrier died at the age of 41 the musical world was robbed of an exceptional talent the like of which has not been heard since. This CD is an excellent introduction for anyone unlucky enough not to have heard her magnificent voice before.

Simple, Sublime 11 Jan 2005
By Erin Matthiessen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I first bought this recording 20 years ago, and it has never lost it's appeal for me. The singing is simple - as suits these simple yet eloquent songs - unmannered, lovely, with that incredible warmth that was intrinsic to everything this great singer recorded. When I am overwrought - as I am from time to time - nothing is as soothing to me as Ferrier singing "O Waly, Waly" or "Now Sleeps The Crimson Petal".

This is a beautiful CD. MS Ferrier's voice is perfect for these songs. If you truly enjoy traditional folk music this recording belongs in your collection.
