Let me just get this out first: I LOVED this book.

There is nothing particularly unexpected or unusual about the story but it was done so well and everything just worked. Quick paced, funny, heart-warming – the perfect summer romance read and I just whizzed through it and delighted in every page.

Kate’s meltdown after being humiliated by her bosses at her hilariously awful law firm Krapp & Lipschitz LLP (the clue is in the name) is both heart-breaking and exhilarating; the sort of thing we’d all love to do in our hated workplaces but that we know we’d regret. Yet it really shows the backbone and humour our heroine has and, although you’ll feel Kate’s pain, you’ll find yourself grinning like a mischievous elf, goading her on even as she photocopies her lady bits.

Then her trip to Barcelona, a city which Parker perfectly captures, is exciting and an escape everyone must pine for from time to time. And yet chasing after a love one hasn’t seen for ten years? Kate, is that wise?

Brilliant characters, ridiculous situations, voodoo, glamour, disgrace, friendship and romance. Really, what more could you possibly want from a story?

HASH(0x939622dc) out of 5 stars Fun Fun Fun 13 Aug. 2014

I don't know who has never had an experience similar to the main character in this book, but I know I have. Granted, I didn't run halfway around the world just because I had a bad experience at work, but if I had it would have made for a story almost as good as this one, I'm sure.

Kate Billings gets thrashed during her evaluation for the law firm she works for. Things continue to go bad for her after that so instead of dealing with the BS she decides to head to Barcelona in search of a long lost romance. Only when she finally catches up with him, she discovers something about him that once again ruins her carefully laid plans.

Kate's Escape is very entertaining, very funny and written by a talented author. I enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to anything else written by this author.

HASH(0x9377a864) out of 5 stars A wonderful, funny book!!! 22 July 2014

Kate's Escape from the Billable Hour by Petula Parker is a great book.

Having been a paralegal for the past 16+ years, I found this book to be a lot of fun to read. Anyone working in the legal field and familiar with "Big "Law" firms and the never-ending need for more billable hours, will find a lot of humor in this book. However, this book is so fun it is for everyone, not just those of us slogging it out in the legal field.

This book is for those people with a first crush they can't move on from and those of us stuck in a job we hate who ask “what am I going to be when I grow up” and “is this really all there is”. This is also perfect for people who love a lot of humor in their books.

I found this book to be particularly funny because it made me remember working for an attorney who used to lecture us to bring a file into the bathroom with us so we could count it as billable time.

The cover of this book is cute although maybe the suitcase should be a little bigger to more accurately reflect the baggage we all carry. The book was also well written and well edited.

HASH(0x93dd66c0) out of 5 stars A lot of fun 26 Sept. 2014

I had great hope for this story. The opening chapters where we learn about Kate's life as an attorney are the best and have me many laugh out loud moments. Then she goes on her quest to find her lost love from high school...a foreign exchange student her family hosted from Spain. All of a sudden, Kate becomes some awkward, clutsy, tongue tied fool. I'm rather tired of that formula. Just because she was some ugly duckling teenager who has grown into an amazing woman doesn't mean she has to trip at every opportunity. Yes, she is socially and romantically immature because she didn't care during her awkward years. I get that and can relate but losing weight and searching for love shouldn't negate the brains she has to get through law school. I feel like the story for juvenile in her interactions with everyone she met in Spain. I secretly cheered for her but also wanted to slap her silly. Poor Kate was not done justice by the author and hence let down this female reader.

HASH(0x93534c48) out of 5 stars A great summer read. 6 Sept. 2014

A great summer read. I couldn't put this book down and finished it in two days. Kate is every woman who wants to escape a soul-sucking job and fly away to some exotic place. I loved the character growth of Kate, and especially the happy ending. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Parker's books.
