If I were to choose my favorite book by Catherine Cookson, I would be at a loss. I own and have read them all. "Kate Hannigan" is indeed one of her very best. When she tells how it very nearly did not get published because of the reality of the subject, it is hard to imagine this happening under today's standards. Almost every book written by Ms Cookson bears this same stamp of reality. Her writing pulls you in and makes you a part of the story. You are able to feel the desperate anguish felt by most of her characters. Once you read her biography, you can understand how she is able to so portray the feelings of the times. I recommend Kate Hannigan and all that follow to anyone who wants to get the feel of real life as it once was. I will definitely read "Kate Hannigan" again. This portrayal of the stigma of illigitimacy and how it can be overcome teaches a lesson to all who read it. Opinions have changed over the years, but the truth is never dated. I believe that this book will always represent the first seed in a garden of knowledge and enjoyment that was given to the world by this dedicated author.
