Book Description

With no more than felt and thread, Kata Golda creates toys and practical items for the home that are undeniably charming, stylish, and sweetly imperfect. Her whimsical creations have been selling at high-end boutiques for several years, and now, in Kata Golda’s Hand-Stitched Felt, she shows crafters of all skill levels how to make 25 of her favorites.
Ranging from children’s finger puppets and a tooth-fairy pillow to photo “brag” books, messenger bags, and curtains and blankets, most of these projects can be completed in an hour or less. They are made from basic shapes of wool felt sewn together and customized with unique details, all using simple, large stitches. Step-by-step instructions and templates, along with adorable photos and hand-drawn illustrations, make each project simple to replicate. Playful tutorials, such as how to personalize projects with a variety of facial expressions, add to the charm of this delightful book.

This is a beautiful book, full of inspiration for simple hand made gifts. I agree that there is nothing very complicated to the projects but I see them as a starting point and have gone on to create my own items from there. It is easy to read and has lovely images and for the price I think it is well worth adding to your library.

2.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed 20 Jan. 2010

I think I was hoping for a greater range of projects from this book. The style, which is certainly 'whimsical' is ok but there did not seem to be a great deal of difference between each project. I haven't rushed to replicate any of the ideas yet, and found myself ordering further books instead.

I began my foray into sewing about 6 months ago, with a 'love hearts' kit intended for children. Irretrievably hooked, I begain searching for hand-sewing books and came across this adorable book packed with simple, charming projects. Sewing machines may open up a world of possibilities and save you time, but I like the homely touch of hand-sewn stuff (lovingly-crooked stitches beat tiny rows of perfection any day, in my opinion) and have no desire to invest in a sewing maching yet.

I made the Baby's Giraffe Quilt for my boyfriend's new nephew, changing the suggested colour scheme which I found a bit too feminine, and it turned out beautifully. Furthermore, it was very simple to do, using only the most basic stitches. I wholeheartedly recommend the book to anyone looking to build on simple hand-sewing skills and get excellent results to give away as gifts (or keep for yourself). If you're an experienced crafter, you won't find much here (except for the larger projects such as the quilt) but newbies will find plenty to keep them occupied. Beautifully presented too!

I am not - or at least I never used to be - a very "crafty" person, but for some reason I have recently found myself drawn to craft books, and have bought quite a few. However, this is the first one that actually got me to make something more or less straight away. Most of the projects in the book are very simple, and probably will appeal mostly to beginners like me. I got the book a few days ago, and I have so far made a couple of wonderfully tactile glasses cases, and intend to make some more as gifts. Also planning on adapting one of the ideas from the book (felt birthday gift tags with felt "ribbons" etc) and make some felt christmas gift tags. Most of the other items in the book look achievable for someone like me too.
