Hailing from a nation shrouded in economic misery and gloom, one would expect one of Greece's premier metal bands to take out their misery in style in the studio, hence despite never having got round to listening to them before, I was pretty excited about this release. Having made the purchase it does not disappoint let me tell you...

RC are traditionally known as a black metal band and, I believe, one with an eclectic and amorphous recording history. If this is true, they have repeated this trend, because although there is a dark BM atmosphere to the record, 'KATA...' has far more of a tribal, industrial feel to it. One thinks of equal measures of Soulfly, Gojira and Ministry, topped off with plenty of black metal atmosphere, sound effects and, typically I believe, Gregorian chanting.

It all makes for a delightful and utterly unique cocktail - powerful, dark, menacing and above all...catchy! Standout tracks for me are 'In Yumem - Xibalba and 'Κατά τον δαίμονα του εαυτού.'

To be nitpicky, the last four tracks (minus the bonus track) are a little monotonous and similar - although they all work in their own way.

One final gripe - though more of a general one than aimed at RC - they have included a bonus track...'Welcome to Hel' and although it's a gem, why include it as a bonus track? Its either part of the album or it isn't! Bonus tracks just confuse me...

Anyhow, nit picking aside, this is a corker of an album from a part of the world not known for its metal, and while no-one wants the troubles in Greece to continue, if they are responsible for the creation of music of this quality, well it has to be a case of every cloud...

I heard a track of Rotting Christ on a website giving their 50 best albums of 2012..I was so impressed I took a chance and got the full album from amazon. I'm so glad cause this album is amazing, quite dark sounding with some death metal style vocals, but has very melodic moments. the atmosphere of the album is very occult, with some monk-ish chanting here and there and some creepy sounds in the background. the bands music has some industrial grooves and some more epic moments to. My fave track is 'Cine iubete i las' that includes a haunting female vocal with only a piano, before the band kicks in with some epic music.
Definitely 5 stars for this well crafted and quirky, dark, occult metal.

Great album. My introduction to Rotting Christ was the utterly brilliant Aealo. This new RC offering contains the standard RC format of dropping guitar chords, great vocals, infectious songs and is drenched with loads of Churchy type effects. If you love the typical RC formula then this album is as adequate as any. Can't wait to see them in a few weeks.
