Kat an Doug on Planet Fankle is the first book in a new series. For her seventh birthday, Kat is given a cyberdug called Doug. But Doug is no mere toy - he is a real cyberdug and Kat's garden just happens to be at the centre of a wormhole roundabout on Doug's map of the universe. Together Kat and Doug can explore hundreds of different planets, each with its own different inhabitants, landscape and weather. Their adventures are strange, funny and very exciting. When Kat and Doug arrive on Planet Fankle, they find that everything is in a guddle, fankelt up or completely tapsalteerie. You can read it to 5-8 year-olds, but it will also be enjoyed as a OEread-alone1 book for older children up to the age of 10. The language used is everyday, colloquial Scots, although with each book in the series, more unusual vocabulary relating specifically to the planet being visited will be included.

Susan Rennie is an editor who has worked on several Scots language reference projects and created print, CD and web materials in Scots for children, including The Electronic Scots School Dictionary (1998) and (co-authored with Matthew Fitt) the Grammar Broonie (2000). She is currently editor of the electronic Dictionary of the Scots Language at Dundee University.
