OK, here's the deal. MS Windows comes with almost everything you need to protect your computer - firewall, automatic updates to help plug vulnerabilities, a spam filter (this comes with the Outlook email client), and even an anti-malware/anti-spyware package called Windows Defender. What Microsoft don't provide is an antivirus program (Defender is not one), so that's what you need to keep your PC and everything on it safe.
Kaspersky make two products, Kaspersky Internet Security 3 User, 1 Year License, 2010 (PC CD) and this Antivirus program. The antivirus program is pretty much what it sounds like - it watches out for viruses in your email or while you're browsing the internet, and stops them from harming your computer. It does it quietly and efficiently in the background. The Internet Security program does all that, and also has a few extra security-related things, including (in my experience) a spam filter that hides emails from me that I wanted to see. The 2009 version also contained a rather pointless duplication of the firewall that comes with Windows, but that seems to have been dropped at the 2010 release.
Anyway, the message is that Kaspersky Antivirus contains everything you need to keep your computer safe, and Internet Security has some other bits that aren't really necessary. Now, when I spend my money on a decent computer, I want as few unnecessary processes using up my precious CPU cycles as possible. And that's why I've downsized from Kaspersky Internet Security to Kaspersky Antivirus. It seems to have done the trick - my laptop is quite a lot more sprightly than it used to be.
Having said that I prefer the Antivirus program to the Internet Security one, you'll probably find that Amazon is selling the Internet Security program (the one with more features) at a lower price. Is it worth paying less to get more? Your choice, but bear in mind those precious CPU cycles....
One final note. Always buy a new version of the program each year when the old license expires. You'll need to uninstall the old antivirus software before you install the new, but it's worth the effort: the prices Kaspersky charges online to renew an existing license is much more than the price of next year's retail version bought from Amazon.

I've been a user of Kaspersky since Version 6 and had always thought Kaspersky was better than the rest, but this version leaves me disappointed. It's not because the protection offered is bad, but there seems to be some issues that let this down.
Kaspersky like some other rival Anti-virus software on the market uses a HTTP web scanner, which scans web browsing traffic for threats. HTTP Web scanners in theory give an extra layer of protection alongside the standard On-access scanner. The Downside is that there is an impact on web page load performance, but in my experience this can vary greatly between Anti-virus solutions. Bitdefenders and Avasts HTTP scanners are very good and I hardly notice a slowdown, but Kasperskys in my opinion is by far the slowest. It seems to take long to open web pages and some web pages have loaded incorrectly for me like Missing images etc. There is an option within the software to disable this feature and then the websites are fast again for me, but why should a paying customer lose an element of protection because the feature doesn't work properly. Kaspersky 2009 also had this feature, but that worked much better than the 2010 version.
Another feature that is annoying for me is the proactive defence, which helps detect Viruses, Trojans, key loggers etc on their behaviour. While it can help stop these nasties infecting a computer when the Malware type isn't in the Kaspersky database, but I have found it likes to falsely label legitimate programs. It was telling me that something (I know to be safe) was acting suspiciously, but lets say it really was a real threat, Kaspersky offered zero information on what to do with it.
The positives of Kaspersky 2010 is that the start-up times have been decreased and there has been a big improvement on update speed. The Kaspersky 2010 Interface also looks better. I just feel compared to my past experiences of earlier Kaspersky versions, this is a let down for me.
