Although he left the merest handful of compositions at his seemingly accidental death in an avalanche while skiing, Mieczyslaw Karlowicz ranks among the most important Polish composers of his generation. The final years of his brief career were taken up by a series of six symphonic poems, the third, fourth and sixth of which are included on this first disc of these works. Alternating between fervent affirmation and brooding melancholy, these impressive late-romantic works are notable for their colourful and imaginative orchestration and fresh and original harmony.

A marvellous introduction to one of the most fascinating 'finds' of the last few years. The Polish composer Mieczyslaw Karlowicz died tragically before he reached the summit of his powers, but the handful of works he composed promised much. On this disc, three of his final works appear (the other three symphonic poems are on a companion disc). They reveal a composer with a mastery of orchstral sound and overall colour, with a particular gift for scoring bass woodwind instruments.

Marlowicz's music falls into two broad types, a Straussian-influenced bold, declamatory style; and music of a quieter, introspective and tragic nature in which one can discern the basic essence of this composer. The Lithuanian Rhapsody -possibly the work to start with - is a case in point. After inward-looking music, full of regret, there is a call to attention and a busy working out of the main themes in an apparently more optimistic spirit, only for the composer to fall back into the initial mood of sad introspection.

Apart from Richard Strauss, a hero to Karlowicz and other 'Young Poland' composers, one can discern Mahler (very present in the first piece), and a range of others such as Josef Suk and even Edvard Grieg in the Rhapsody. The last work, completed by another after the composer's death, even has echoes of Tchaikovsky. But here is an original voice, a composer who writes music of real passion that will appeal to all those whio revel in the rich scores of the late Romantic period before the First World War.

The recording, supported by the Polish government, is both sumptuous and clear. Naxos provides the liner notes online available to those who want to know more about the works before buying the CD. Bt don't hesitate; you won't be disappointed.
