Product Description

Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) was neither a professional photographer nor a natural scientist. He was a sculptor, amateur photographer, and a professor at Berlin's school of arts and crafts where he taught modeling. His interest in the plant world was of an artistic and didactic nature: he was fascinated by the structure of plants, their organic configuration, and their "lofty artistic form" born "of expediency," which he wanted to illustrate and compare in a photographic style that could be described as strictly objective, almost graphic. His goal was to create a catalogue of forms for the benefit of artists, artisans, and, above all, architects, providing them with a book of instruction and models to guide them in their designs.

Karl Blossfeldt was an early 20th century photographer best known for his botanical studies produced with homemade cameras.

This book would be of particular interest for anybody studying the history of photography or who is interested in botany or black and white photography in general.

This book comprises 80 pages of which 44 are full size plates. His other book "Art Forms in the Plant World" (ISBN: 978-0486249902)is a larger book with bigger reproductions and a more extensive collection of photographs; however the image reproduction in this book is of better quality with sharper images and better tonal range.

The images were beautifully presented and the book had a simple quality that I loved.

However, the 'text' at the front was whimsical arty twoddle.

For the images I give 10 out of 10!
