African guitarist Lionel Loueke, is one of the most sought after guitarists in jazz today and is first call for heavyweight names like Herbie Hancock and Terence blanchard."Karibu" sees him making his own personal musical statement in what is mainly just a trio setting.He adds vocals in his native Beninese tongue on two tracks and what a delight it is to hear him vocalising in perfect harmony with his guitar.Wayne Shorter adds some edgy soprano on two tracks "Naima" and "Light Dark" and Herbie Hancock sits in for "Light Dark" and "Seven Teens".The album is pretty straight ahead stuff with Loueke drawing on jazz,flamenco and world music for his inspiriations.When Hancock and Shorter join the proceedings the music takes a different turn altogether.The trio tracks are largly sunny cheery affairs but even Naima takes on a dark complexion with Shorters abstract,edgy Sporano."Light Dark",the longest track of the album,sees his two esteemed guests in fine form both providing slightly loose abstract solos that veer away from the main melody but are still highly musical in their own right.
Coming from someone who is not normally a guitar trio fan - i quite enjoyed it if a little light weight though at times .(Mike Stern it certainly is not !)
An undemading album which should have some listening appeal for most jazz fans that enjoy music beyond the be-bop tradition.
