Great! 21 Nov. 2012
By Peter P. Fuchs - Published on
I pronounce this recording of the Third Piano Concerto the most exciting Martinu recording ever. It is also the one in which the card about Martinu's music "all sounding the same", which is sort of true even though I love it, is here shown to be most unappreciative. The incredible performance by Palenicek and Ancerl is really the star here, as the they grip onto every contour of the music and make it all sound like the most profound commentary.
This somewhat "playing for their lives" quality may be relevant to this work having been performed (according to the liner notes) in defiance of the communist authorities who amazingly found Martinu's ever-plangent syncopations as a threat to some agitprop conception. Thus, the music in this performance takes on some sound of noble protest and oracular cadence. I really can't think of any other performance of any Martinu work that comes close to it....ever. In addition the other work here, is entertaining as a kind of Martinu version of Les Noces, with much the same vibe.

Folk Cantata 1 July 2013

This is a reissue of an older LP recording. I'm not aware that there are any other recordings of this piece. It is very folksy and, at times, haunting. It contains some gorgeous music. A bit of a rarity but worth hearing
