Karel Ancerl Gold Edition Vol.10. Prokofiev - Symphony No 1. Piano Concertos 1 & 2
I purchased this CD for the 2nd Prokoviev G minor Piano Concerto recording as it was the one I 'grew up' with on the Australian Supraphon vinyl pressing (which has been worn out) and wanted to relive the thrill again 40 years later. This is my favourite 20th Century piano concerto. You know how your memory plays tricks on you? Well, thankfully, I'm not disappointed in this recording and it will remain my favourite now. There are flaws, the piano grows steadily out of tune and this becomes particularly noticeable in the last movement. However, the interpretation of the solo part by Dagmar Baloghová is wonderfully inspiring and the balance with the orchestra almost perfect. The perspective of the recording is excellent placing the listener at about the 5th row of the stalls.
The Classical Symphony interpretation sparkles, a much closer microphone positioning and therefore more magnified detail, particularly in the strings. This suits the works neo-classical style well.
The 1st Piano Concerto performance by the young Richter is an amazing tour-de-force. Well worth having this CD for the 2nd Concerto alone!
