5.0 out of 5 stars Best kept secret in Uechi-Ryu, 19 Feb 2005

This book is easy to read, and the pictures are so easy to follow. I like to bring my book to class with me to use as a guide when I'm doing kyu kumite. I enjoyed the pen self defense section, and found the legal section to be very informative. Every student should own one. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mentor in Black and White, 5 Jan 2012
By Mark W. - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Karate: A Master's Secret Of Uechi-ryu (Paperback)
It is a common understanding that there is no substitute for the interaction between teacher and student in passing on knowledge. Ihor Rymaruk has somehow managed to overcome that common belief with this book. I have read several other books on Uechi Ryu by well known authors such as George Mattson and Alan Dollar. A common trend in those books is that the authors seemed to simply be trying to show how much they have learned, without covering the details necessary for someone who has no knowledge to learn on their own. One book in particular could have almost have been a high school yearbook with photos of the author's accomplishments and travels. Mr. Rymaruk was able to overcome this and created a book with the eager to learn student in mind, not himself. Karate: A Master's Secrets of Uechi-Ryu takes the reader through the details of every movement, in an easily understandable step by step process. This book can truly take a novice and develop them into a respected practitioner of Uechi Ryu with minimal or no outside assistance. His photos provide the visual examples that allow the reader to fully appreciate his written words. Even better than the photos are the DVD's he has created that provide an unprecedented innovation in the way Uechi practitioners may train. I cannot recommend this book and his DVD's enough, whether for the seasoned black belt seeking to regain lost details, the middle kyu's looking for study material for their next test, the novice as a guide to accompany them throughout their life and for the individual who has no knowledge of martial arts who is seeking to dive into that unknown world. Ihor Rymaruk has created a mentor out of black ink and white pages, a true masterpiece.

Master Ihor's book is quite comprehensive. It provides both a history of the style and detailed instructions on how to perform it. The photographs are done well and are helpful.
