5.0 out of 5 stars A gem 9 Feb 2012
By Sid Nuncius #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This is an excellent disc of early Baroque lute music by two of the era's greatest composers for the instrument. Both Italian and active in the late 16th- and early 17th Centuries, between them Kapsberger and Piccinini (among others) moved the lute and theorbo forward from the modal delicacy of the Renaissance toward the contrapuntal complexity of the Baroque era. The music of both is full of melodic and harmonic invention and is fabulously enjoyable to listen to. The music here is all played on theorbo, a type of lute with added long bass strings, and the sheer beauty, depth and resonance of its sound makes the music glow all the more.

The musicians here play it all beautifully. All three have now become established stars of the early music scene and their treatment of the pieces here is excellent. There is some almost Flamenco-like fire in places, quiet contemplative beauty in others and also some lovely, rhythmic arpeggiated pieces which seem to me to be faint precursors of some of Bach's preludes for keyboard or cello. The programme is varied with solo theorbo and ensemble pieces, and it makes a delightful disc to play from beginning to end, never growing dull or same-y.

The recorded sound is excellent and the notes very interesting, making this an all-round gem of a disc, I think. I love it and recommend it very warmly.

(You may also be interested in an excellent disc of Kapsberger played by the wonderful Paul O'Dette Kapsberger - Lute Works, and a terrific double CD of Piccinini on Brilliant Classics Piccinini - Lute Works - both favourites of mine.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Medieval Masterpiece 13 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Think medieval music is a bit elementary and square?
Kapsberger's Canario on this disc is 3 minutes of pure ecstasy.
It will haunt you and, like me, you'll let it wash over you again and again.
Where has it been all my life?
It'll be with me for the rest of it.
Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful introduction to Renaissance music 24 Mar 2013
By H. Ashford VINE VOICE
Format:MP3 Download|Verified Purchase
I bought this album because I heard Kapsberger's Canario on the radio, and it's all too easy to follow the link and find you have bought an mp3 download!

The Canario, with its wonderful contrapuntal complexity, is by far the nicest piece on the album, but I am coming to appreciate the others too. For me, this album has provided a wonderful introduction to music from the pre-baroque era, and I am very glad I bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This has opened my eyes (and ears) to lute music 4 July 2012

A truly excellent CD. Brilliantly played and very relaxing. It is never far away from my CD player. I had not heard of Kapsberger before being tipped off to buy this, which is a shame because his music is sublime.
