In short: Based strictly on the audio and video quality, this would get 1 star, 2 stars at best, however given that this material has been in dire need of an official release since its only release on VHS (in the U.S. as "Best of Kansas Live" in the mid-1980s), I'm inclined to give it the benefit of the doubt. It truly is essential for any Kansas fan.

I have several bootlegs of this concert (Omaha 1982) as well as the original commercial VHS release, and the audio on this release is by far the cleanest of all that I have heard. Unfortunately, no work at all has been done to the video; it's very dark and coarse; par for the times I guess. Furthermore, the "Show Time" circular logo is everpresent in the upper right corner throughout, very annoying, and the song titles that appear at the beginning of each song look like they were done by a 1970s Pong game. Talk about being low budget.

Also, whomever did the case artwork gets the EPICFAIL(tm) award for the year: "Steve Walsh at it's Best". Oh really? Not appearing in this film: Steve Walsh.

All my petty niggling aside, this performance is absolutely superb. I've always preferred John Elefante at the helm of Kansas over Steve Walsh, and this performance showcases why. His voice is epic. The quintessential AOR voice.

As an aside, if you're a fan of John Elefante, you MUST pick up the CD Mastedon - 3 from 2009. His voice has held up amazingly over the years, far better than Walsh's voice, and the compositions are phenomenal!

At any rate, outside of other source material existing of this concert, this is most likely to be the best you'll ever see and hear of John Elefante as the front man of Kansas, given that the band now pretty much ignores the years he fronted the band, and for that reason alone it is a must buy.

For a true die-hard Kansas fan this is awesome. For anyone else avoid at all costs.

The picture quality is amateur to say the least, audio not much better and i'm pretty sure knock off DVDs are better quality than this.

Steve Walsh at IT'S best, geez that's not even English let alone true.

If this was purely a CD I would probably give it 3 maybe 4 stars but it isn't!

OK I have to edit this:

I think I was being unfair and judging it purely on the video quality and that was wrong. I just watched again and the energy and musicality of KANSAS in this DVD is superb.

John Elefante is truly enjoying being in the band and his voice gives Steve Walsh a run for his money, and wins!. Dust in the Wind sounds like SW did on the original album (something he can't do anymore). And if you don't believe me buy the Mastedon :3 cd and compare it with the new Kansas DVD.

The whole band just seems to gel better and it is a pleasure to watch.

Kansas are one of my ever favourite bands, so it is easy to see why I truly like and purchased this product. Still - for the casual fan - this DVD portrays a very interesting and adventurous musical phase of the band. Contrary to what the artwork of this dvd says, the main Kansas singer on this show is John Elefante who was - at the time - I believe in his early twenties. His voice is really good and gives an interesting interpretation of the band's classic cuts.

But it is not only Elefante's presence, but also Warren Ham provides woodwinds, keyboards and extra vocals on stage as an added seventh member. Warren will later on become a member of Kerry Livgren's band AD and the arrangements of this dvd show a very different side of Kansas who - here and there - become similar to Jethro Tull or Supertramp thanks to the presence of saxophone and flute.

The driving version of "No one together" probably summarizes all that is good in this DVD.

It is only 4 stars because in all honesty the sound quality is definitely not perfect and a couple of times the audio goes significantly down. Also there was no enhancement of the original tapes so you can definitely tell the images are more than 25 years old. Still, it is a truly enjoyable purchase!
