Book Description

25 May 2012 Taschen Basic Art Series (Book 25)
Painting outside the box. The founder of abstract art. The Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), who later lived in Germany and France, is one of the pioneers of twentieth-century art. Nowadays he is regarded as the founder of abstract art and is, moreover, the chief theoretician of this type of painting. Together with Franz Marc and others he founded the group of artists known as the "Blauer Reiter" in Munich. His art then freed itself more and more from the object, eventually culminating in the "First Abstract Watercolour" of 1910. In his theoretical writings Kandinsky repeatedly sought the proximity of music; and just as in music, where the individual notes constitute the medium whose effect stems from harmony and euphony, Kandinsky was aiming for a pure concord of colour through the interplay of various shades. Gauguin had demanded that everything "must be sacrificed to pure colors." Kandinsky was the first to realise this and thus to influence a whole range of artists. Every book in TASCHEN's "Basic Art Series" features: a detailed chronological summary of the artist's life and work, covering the cultural and historical importance of the artist; approximately 100 color illustrations with explanatory captions; and, a concise biography.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good balance 10 Nov 2013

Good balance of images and text. I prefer looking at images rather than reading text when it comes to art books so I'm mostly happy. Nice colours and good variety of sizes of images. Maybe too basic for me though but if you're looking for an introduction to Kandinsky than it's good.

4.0 out of 5 stars The King of the Abstract 10 May 2014

I've visited numerous European art galleries over the past decade and I've started buying these Taschen books to find out a little more about art history and more importantly to gaze upon the artists beautiful pictures in the comfort of my own home. This book about the Russian painter Kandinsky features large numbers of attractive prints ,of differing sizes, as well as a biography of the artist. I found Kandinsky's art to be interesting and colourful but perhaps a little too abstract for my tastes. Most of his paintings are full of random shapes, lines and squiggles against a background of bright ,contrasting colours , which are appealing to the eye but very difficult to understand and appreciate on a deeper level to those uninitiated into the world of art. There are very few representational paintings and I found the biographical text quite difficult to follow at times, but it is a good book and I wouldn't mind having a few Kandinsky prints on the walls of my home as they still look very modern.
