Book Description

1 Feb 2013
Voudou, sex, death and revolution are key ingredients in the stunning themes and visual imagery of the street theatre Kanaval of Jacmel, Haiti, where the men drag up, black up, wear cow horns, throw lassos and put snakes in their mouths! Light years away from the government sponsored, tourist-inspired floats of carnival throughout the world, this event is a vessel for Haitian peasants to discuss the local politics of Haiti, talk about the slave revolt that gave birth to Haiti, the first Black Republic, to commune with ancestors both personal and historical and much more. The book is a fascinating combination of photography, cultural and historical analysis and background, anthropology and also includes a set of oral histories by participants in this unique event.

4.0 out of 5 stars Immense photography, let down by the articles 13 July 2010
By Ray
Format:Paperback
I couldn't possibly recommend the photography of this book highly enough. It's wonderful. At times it reminded me of Joel-Peter Witkin--only without the stylised treatment. Truly exquisite.

The articles, however, are very uneven: some are very good indeed, whilst others are near parodic exemplars of postmodern word salad nonsense.

I discovered this book at a friend's house - and came home and ordered myself a copy that night! Beautiful, eerie portraits that shine a light on a world that few of us will ever see in person. Probably my favorite discovery for 2012!

These are some of the most stunning photographs I have ever seen. And the first person essays that accompany them are priceless, profound and help illuminate the creative spirit that drives Haiti forward.
