Product Description

Early mastery of the two kana syllabaries of the Japanese writing system - hiragana and katakana - is essential for anyone who wishes to make rapid and steady progress in the Japanese language. But learning all the syllabaries one by one is a painstaking and time-consuming process. This handy book introduces a wonderful new method that helps make the process much easier. It aids students to memorize and recognize the shapes of the various kana symbols through a clever series of pictorial mnemonics. Now you can learn them with great ease, anytime and anywhere - at home, in the train, in the classroom - with this simple method.

This book is absolutely brilliant! It uses pictures relating to the kana to help you learn much faster. With this book I learnt all the kana in one evening and I still remember them a year later! This is definitely the book to get if you want to learn kana quickly, it also has writing practice for each kana.

I recommend this book to anyone learning Japanese kana script. It is very well presented with pictures to help you remember the shapes of both hiragana and katakana. However there are a couple of odd representations for some of the sounds. For example "ha" is represented by a HOckey player and "ho" is a farmer with a hat and a HOe. I personally would have done them the other way round.

This book is a life-saver - as other reviewers have said, it will teach you hiragana and katakana quickly and make them totally memorable. I found it excellent in every way. The slight oddities mentioned by one reviewers are easily explained - Ogawa-sensei was teaching Japanese to Americans, of course. So long as you remember this, you'll be fine; you just have to think Groucho Marx. A haackey player, a noo tricycle, a waak to fry your noodles in.

Only thing is, the pages of my "Minna No Nihongo" are permanently full of such strange characters - an old man ice-skating, a turtle singing in a choir, two eels, a cheerleader, a moose, a young woman with a hose-pipe, an old woman without a crow...

Anything that can make learning such a difficult language as Japanese both easy and fun is well worth having.
