When we bought this last December, it was a very useful piece of equipment in our sitting. When used with a Kameleon 5-in-1 remote, we could have complete control of our living room experience!
However, the last year has changed the playing field and new products have eradicated the need for this device. We have purchased a One For All URC8350 Energy Saver 4 in 1 remote, and this doesn't require the receiver in order to work with the plugs. This makes things a lot easier to use, as there is less clutter by the TV. The button combination is also a lot easier on this remote, allowing even the least technically minded of people to use the remote!
For those who want to know the technical explanation for the difference in remotes:
The reason that the receiver is required is that most remotes only use Infra Red waves, while the socket adapters work on radio waves. This means that there must be a bridge to convert the signals from one form to another, with that bridge being this receiver. This is an important thing to do, as radio waves can travel through objects, while Infra Red must be in direct sight. By converting the signal to radio waves, the socket can still be controlled even if there is no direct line of sight between the receiver and the plug.
As the Kameleon 5-in-1 remote only uses Infra Red, the receiver is required to convert the signal between the two states. The remote must be pointed directly at the receiver, which then turns of the lamps for you.
The improvement with the One For All URC8350 Energy Saver 4 in 1 remote comes in that the remote both operates with Infra Red and radio waves. Because of this, there is no need for the receiver as the remote uses both Infra Red and Radio waves. This means that no conversion of signals has to be made, and the remote can directly control the sockets. Due to the use of radio waves, the remote doesn't have to be pointed at the sockets to work, allowing it to be used in other rooms if you so desire!
