First of all let's get the usual gripes out of the way. Yes, the remote does buzz a bit, but you can only hear it if you have the thing strapped to your head like some sort of hi-tech ear muff. Yes, you can see you finger prints all over it as soon as it comes out of the box. But hey, it’s a remote control – designed to be hand held – if you don’t want to get finger prints on the thing, leave it in the box and throw it at your TV On switch! Yes, small it is not, but put it against your Sky remote and there is not a great deal of difference.

Doubtlessly a clever piece of kit, easy to programme, either using the codes supplied in the manual or gleaned from the website or in learning mode from your existing remotes. I can even get my Panasonic DVD Recorder to do things it couldn’t do with its own remote! It controls my LG LCD TV, which my Sky+ remote simply refused to touch. Very short on Hitachi codes though and I had to enter learning mode to programme my Hitachi DAB/CD unit.

Using the web downloads to programme through your computer speakers is a different matter however. Remember the ear muffs I mentioned earlier? Make sure you are wearing them before you try this and ensure all household pets are safely sedated. My cat still has a twitch in one eye and a tendency to walk sideways following my experiments with these downloads.

The build is fair with the touch screen seeming a little flimsy and unsure of it self. My unit has a rattle to it, like a little piece of plastic spue is rattling round inside the casing. Quality control may not be one of Kameleon’s highest priorities.

The manual is clear and easy to follow – don’t be worried by the size when it comes out of the box – there are a total of seven languages covered!

All in all – a stunning piece of technology, replaced five remotes within an hour or so, looks good, does anything your old remotes could do (within reason) and some things they couldn’t.

After opening up the Kameleon from its packaging, i was suprised at its size, its a big remote, but feels well weighted. As soon as you touch the remote it instantly looks used as finger prints get all over the plastic aluminium finish. After touching thr lcd type pad, it feels well made but just a little tacky. The illumination of the device is certainly something, espically at night when no other lights are on. It is very easy to programme, just find the manufacture of you home entertaiment systems in the back of the manual and try the codes out untill you find one which controls all the features on the original remote, you will find that with well known manufactures, like panasonic there will be a lot of codes, because of so many models, but you will adventually find the one you need. If a function is missing you can just use you normal remote to send the infra red beam into the kameleon and hey presto, it learns the function. This is a great piece of kit and has helped me, only fault i can find the aluminium plastic finsih is a little poor, but otherwise its a steardy product. One huge advantage over the first generation model is that this one doesnt include a motion sensor. This may seem like a disadvantage but trust me, the motion sensor is just annoying, if you had the remote on the bed beside you for example every little movement would make the remote light up, annoying you and also draining the batterly life. If your deciding between the logitech harmony remotes also, i would advise looking into both seriously. The reason i didnt pick the harmony remotes is that my home entertainment set up is a little tricky, espically haveing a scart box as well, i therefore would not of got the full usuage out of the logitech remotes. If your looking for a neat modern all in one remote choose the kameleon, its just like having 6 remotes in one, but if you want to take things to the next level and really take advantage of your home entertainment system, the logitech harmonys are quite something, but be prepaired to pay a little bit more and live with some of the awful design shapes of the harmonys.

I have a very diverse set of equiptment, and was a bit concerned that even this monster would not accomodate my needs. I needed to control My Tiny (Samsung Based) plasma screen, a JVC dvd/Cinema Dolby surround centre, a Pioneer dvd (hard disk) recorder and two different Freeview boxes, all with one control. Even though half my kit didnt have a URT code (Universal Remote Control Code) available - there are three different ways of getting your existing controls functions to be converted to the Kameleon. For the two stubborn units I have, just by pointing and squeezing my existing remotes to the Kameleon, I now find myself with a 'glow in the dark master of all remote controls'. Quite frankly it is better than I hoped. 5 remotes converted into one. Thats whats I wanted, Thats what I paid for, and thats what I got. (Oh and it looks as clever as it performs). What can I say. 5 out of 5 stars. Yes there are many cheaper. But if you have a lot of kit, and some of that kit is not the most mass-produced widley sold of all models, this control, this monster of all controls, is the baby you are looking for, and frankly, worth every single penny.
